As more businesses find success in downtown Syracuse, community leaders struggle to persuade recent college graduates to live in the area.

For more than a decade, Maren King drove from her home in DeWitt to her office on the SUNY-Environmental Science and Forestry campus. However, after years of taking the same route to work, King said the suburban life didn’t appeal too much to her after her two sons left for college, so she decided to move and buy a condo in downtown Syracuse in 2009.

The House of S. Jaye hosts art shows and vendor markets that give Syracuse artists a platform to share their creations.

Last Sunday, the House of S. Jaye hosted the Syracuse Indie Market for its third vendor show. The art studio has held weekly art shows, dance classes, non-profit events and even a concert by Symphoria, a local co-op orchestra, since it opened over two years ago.

Sam Randolph, the studio’s founder and owner, hopes to make the Indie Market a weekly event.

It's easy to fall into a comfortable routine while abroad, but I decided it was time to explore Beijing.

I knew, coming to China, that I’d meet people from completely different backgrounds than me. I have classmates from Mongolia, the Philippines, Sweden, Portugal, Australia, France, and the Netherlands. The international scene has been one of the best parts of studying abroad in Beijing, and is something you can’t really get anywhere else.
