Syracuse shooting woes continue

The Orange came out flat once more on the offensive side of the court Saturday against Georgetown. Syracuse shot just 32.6-percent (15-of-46) from the field and 9.1-percent (1-of-11) from the beyond the arc. Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said his team’s been having trouble shooting the ball its last few games after playing DePaul Wednesday.

No. 15 Syracuse snapped its three-game losing streak in 78-57 thrashing of DePaul. The win marked the final Big East game in the Carrier Dome.

The No. 17 Syracuse (23-7, 11-6) snapped a three-game losing streak, defeating the DePaul Blue Demons (11-19, 2-15) 78-57.  Wednesday night’s victory also marked the final home game for seniors Brandon Triche and James Southerland.

“I didn’t think I was going to be this excited just because we had lost three straight games,” guard Triche said. “I didn’t care who we were playing; we had to win.”

Another poor shooting night for No. 12 Orange lead to the team's third straight loss in Saturday's game against No. 10 Louisville.

The losing streak continues.

No. 12 Syracuse (22-7, 10-6) lost its third game in a row, this time to No. 10 Louisville (24-5, 12-4) on Saturday afternoon, 58-53. This marked the last game between the two in Big East play. Turnovers and a poor offensive start put SU in a hole that they weren’t able to fight out of.

“You can’t make those types of mistakes in tournament type games,” said head coach Jim Boeheim. “It’s difficult to win against zone defenses when you don’t make many shots from the perimeter.”

Syracuse looks to get some interior depth with the return of its freshman center DaJuan Coleman.

After, a 57-46 loss to Georgetown Saturday night, head coach Jim Boeheim said Coleman should be set to play Marquette on Feb. 25.

"I think he could play now," Boeheim said. "I wanted to give him at least a couple days of practice and just see how he felt. But I really wanted to give him a week or so."

Ten years after winning the 2003 national championship, Syracuse retired Carmelo Anthony's No. 15 jersey.

Carmelo Anthony didn't know the meaning of "bleeding Orange" until he saw SU head coach Jim Boeheim sitting on his front step after Anthony walked got home from school.

"At that moment, something clicked," Anthony said.

In front of a record crowd, No. 11 Georgetown controlled most of the game, en route to a 57-46 upset victory over No. 11 Syracuse.

Otto Porter single-handedly took over the game with the flick of his wrist.

In a game where neither team shot particularly well, the Georgetown forward scored 33 points and the No. 11 Hoyas (21-4, 11-3) upset No. 8 Syracuse (22-5, 10-4) 57-46 Saturday. Both teams shot below 36-percent from the field, and neither team could find its shot from behind the arc.

After a scoring spree in the first half, No. 8 Syracuse cruised past the Friars in an 82-59 victory.

Syracuse played like a top-ten team should play Wednesday night, dismantling Providence College, 84-59.

"We had real good patience on offense," head coach Jim Boeheim said. "That first half, you really couldn't play better basketball than that."

Long-time Big East rivals Syracuse and Georgetown play their last regular season game in the Carrier Dome in front of a record-breaking crowd.

It was only a matter of time before Syracuse broke the record for most spectators at an on-campus basketball game.

SU announced Tuesday that the men's basketball game between the No. 8 Orange and the No. 11 Georgetown Hoyas on Feb. 23 has sold out. The final ticket count of 35,012 breaks SU's previous record 34,616 fans set on Feb. 27, 2010 when the Orange hosted Villanova.

This marks the 72nd time a crowd of over 30,000 people will watch a basketball game in the Carrier Dome. Georgetown has been the opponent in 17 of those games.
