Jerome Smith

Football players will alternate between all-blue, all-white or all-grey uniforms throughout next year.

Every day, SU head coach Scott Shafer said he’d walk down the hallway next to his office and see how the program, the players and the uniforms have changed over the years. And Wednesday at Destiny USA, Shafer and the team unveiled a new look the Orange will wear during the 2014-2015 season.

Jerome Smith, Jay Bromley and Marquis Spruill were among 13 SU football players who had one final shot to increase their draft stocks.

Jerome Smith walked out of Manley Field House Wednesday afternoon like he’d just scored the game-winning touchdown for the Orange. With beads of sweat dripping down his face, Smith smiled widely. After a sub-par NFL Combine in February, Smith had cause for celebration: he improved his 40-yard dash time by over two-tenths of a second—from 4.84 seconds to between 4.5 and 4.6 seconds.

The Orange won 34-31 in a back-and-forth game that ended with last second-touchdown from quarterback Terrel Hunt.

Syracuse will remember the 2013 football season as one riddled with missed opportunities, close losses and blowout ones, too.

But it will also be remembered for the final 34-31 come-from-behind victory over Boston College Saturday at the Carrier Dome, catapulting the Orange into bowl-eligibility.

At 5-5 on the year, Syracuse needed one win to become eligible for a BCS bowl game. But injuries and a sputtering offense derailed the Orange in a 17-16 loss.

When Syracuse's first drive against Pittsburgh started, the offensive line's run block looked strong. The Orange's first series lasted only ending with a 36-yard run by Jerome Smith in the first three minutes.

But then Sean Hickey went down with an injury and left the game, and the offensive attack began unraveling.

The Orange defense did not give up a touchdown for the second straight week in hard-fought 20-3 victory.

On its first possession Saturday against Maryland, Syracuse marched down the field, burning nearly eight minutes off the clock. Running back Jerome Smith capped off the 16-play, 80-yard drive by plowing into the end zone for the game’s first score.

The Orange had no answer on defense for the Yellow Jackets triple option offense and couldn't respond with any offense, leading to the blowout loss.

Georgia Tech ran all over Syracuse on offense and shutout the Orange out on defense, leading to a 56-0 win Saturday.

Georgia Tech (4-3, 3-2) snapped a three-game losing streak by executing its triple option attack to perfection as well as making big plays on defense and special teams. It was clear from the start that Syracuse (3-4, 1-2) hadn’t seen anything like the triple option and head coach Scott Shafer acknowledged that fact after the game.

Syracuse could not contain the potent offense of No. 3 Clemson. Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins torched the Orange in a 49-14 thrashing Saturday afternoon.

Syracuse football’s introduction into the Atlantic Coast Conference didn’t go as planned on Saturday as No. 3 Clemson beat the Syracuse 49-14.

“We got beat by a doggone good football team today,” head coach Scott Shafer said. “There’s a reason why they are top three in the country.”

September 21, 2013 - 6:18pm
Quarterback Terrel Hunt was responsible for five touchdowns and the special teams forced four turnovers as the Orange dominated in a 52-17 victory over the Green Wave.

The Syracuse Orange became the 15th FBS program to win 700 games Saturday, beating Tulane 52-17. Terrel Hunt led the offense in his first career start, completing 16 of 21 passes for 175 yards and four touchdowns and running in another score.

“I thought Terrel played really well,” head coach Scott Shafer said. “If he stays in rhythm he’s pretty good.”

Hunt was especially on point in the first half, going 14-for-17 passing.

September 8, 2013 - 12:25am
SU couldn't overcome at a 34-7 haft time deficit, falling to the Wildcats, 48-27.

Senior quarterback Drew Allen threw four interceptions and Syracuse (0-2) fell to Northwestern (2-0) 48-27.

The Orange defense struggled early on and gave up a touchdown on the first drive of the game when Wildcat quarterback Kain Colter connected with junior running back Treyvon Green for a 8-yard passing play.

August 31, 2013 - 9:13pm
The Orange failed to capitalize on opportunities, eventually falling to Penn State in MetLife Stadium.

Drew Allen’s career at Syracuse got off to an inauspicious start on Saturday at MetLife Stadium when the first snap from scrimmage for the Orange was botched for a 3-yard loss.

Things didn’t get much better for Syracuse, either, as Allen completed just 16 of 37 passes in a 23-17 loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions (1-0) in the second New York’s College Classic.
