Chancellor’s inauguration set for April

Kent Syverud will be formally installed as Syracuse University’s 12th Chancellor and President at Hendricks Chapel.

Come April 11, the SU community can officially call him Chancellor Syverud.

Kent Syverud will officially be installed as Syracuse University’s 12th Chancellor and President on Friday, April 11.

Starting at 7 a.m., the new Chancellor will embark on a 1.2-mile run around campus that will end on the Shaw Quad, where a celebration will ensue. Students, faculty and staff are invited to join.

Hendricks food pantry serves hungry students

An increasing number of students facing food insecurity receive support from a collection of goods right on campus.

Kenny knows the maximum amount of snack wraps he can buy at the Schine Dining Center without going over his budget. If he buys two wraps, he will fill his stomach and will only have to pay three dollars. Kenny, who asked that his full name not be used for privacy reasons, adds that because he “knows the wrap lady,” she will pack his wrap full with food.

Syracuse community honors Rob Edson

Hundreds packed Hendricks Chapel to remember the longtime SU Athletics staffer and Onondaga Community College athletic director who passed away suddenly.

The air was still inside Hendricks Chapel Thursday, just before the memorial service for Rob Edson began. There was scuffing of soft-soles and dress shoes on granite steps; exhaling of charter buses, signaling the arrival of dozens from the Syracuse community to pay respects.

Hendricks Chapel dean Tiffany Steinwert described Edson as “a man of great integrity, loyalty and love,” adding that longtime  Syracuse University Athletics staffer and Onondaga Community College's athletic director since 2011 “exemplified the type of person we all strive to be.”

Heavy clouds hung down from the sky, coating the Syracuse University campus in a layer of shady gray. The rain was falling from them fast and hard. The air was filled with an invisible thickness; its warmth coating the skin of students huddled underneath their umbrellas. In the midst of all this meteorological misery, Kent D. Syverud, who had just been announced hours earlier to the Syracuse community as the next chancellor of the university, stood at the podium in Hendricks Chapel, clad in a tie emblazoned with a bright printed SU logo.

Laugh in Peace stand-up tour encourages interfaith comedy

A reverend, rabbi and Muslim comic walked into Hendricks Chapel on Friday, filling it with laughter.

There was nothing but laughter and smiling faces in Hendricks Chapel Friday afternoon as the Lutheran Campus Ministry at Syracuse University and SUNY ESF partnered with Hillel and the Muslim Student Union to bring The Laugh in Peace Comedy Tour.

The 2010 National Geographic "Adventurer of the Year" spoke in Hendricks Chapel about the 103-day journey at sea.

Life can seem pretty bleak when you’re in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and all four of your rowing oars are broken.  And you’re alone.  And you don’t have a motor. 

That happened to Roz Savage, an environmentalist and the first woman to row across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans.

Annual concert brings holiday season to SU

"Holidays at Hendricks" featured several well-known holiday songs including "O Holy Night," "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and "Winter Wonderland."

The chapel lights darkened as both choir and audience members held onto lit candlesticks. It was the beginning of the concert’s final song, “Silent Night,” and a favorite of Emily Cirillo.

"The lights are turned out and the chapel glows," said Cirillo, director of the Hendricks Chapel Handbell Ringers. "To me, this is when the holiday season officially begins."

Environmentalist kicks off University Lectures

350.org founder Bill McKibben spoke at Hendricks Chapel Wednesday night about global climate change.

Bill McKibben started his lecture with a joke.

“The Dalai Lama is a hard act to follow,” he said, garnering some laughter from the crowd.

But McKibben was greeted with a sea of audience members who packed into Hendricks Chapel Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. to see him speak as part of the first Syracuse University 2012-13 University Lectures series.
