Commentary: This fixture in SU's student section reflects on his days cheering on the Orange.

It was one of the biggest days of my life.

The day I became a graduate of Syracuse University. Like many of my classmates that sat around me on the turf of the Carrier Dome, I had many emotions running through my head. I was excited to start the next chapter of my life, and dreading the debt I was about to walk into.

But I also had one other thing on my mind.

Sunday marked the 162nd Commencement at Syracuse University. Donald E. Newhouse, class of 1951, delivered the commencement address and received an honorary degree while 5,470 students received their attended the event.

Most colleges require students to declare their major by their sophomore year, but how realistic is it to know what you want to do for the rest of your life before you are 20 years old?

Award-winning poet Mary Karr and others aim to inspire more than 6,000 SU and SUNY-ESF graduates, their families and supporters on Sunday.

The excitement on the faces of graduating students and their families is pervasive, giving a colorful, vibrant buzz to the Carrier Dome this Commencement Sunday.

Doting mothers run around with coffee cups, fathers snap last-minute photos before their graduates run off to their procession, and children grin bashful smiles, anxious for the ceremony to begin. Graduates can be spotted all over campus up until 9 a.m., when they must be in their places at the Dome, huddled and bouncing with a healthy mixture of joy and nervousness.

On graduation day, students reflected on their college accomplishments and look toward their future beyond the Hill.

It was a day of celebration, marking the end one life chapter and the beginning of another. With one swift motion, more than 5,000 graduates lifted their hands, moved their tassels to the left and launched their caps skyward as Syracuse University concluded its 160th Commencement Ceremony in the Carrier Dome.

Commentary: SU to thank for helping graduates learn, grow as people.

When was the last time someone asked you, “So, what did you learn in school today?” For me, it’s been ages.

To be honest, I never liked the question, so I kept it simple.

“Nothing,” I’d say. Nothing?

Don’t get me wrong: I was proud of memorizing the preposition song, the capital of every state, or the finger trick to multiply by nines (hopefully you were lucky enough to learn it!) –- but school was school.

SU officials said Monday Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist David Remnick will deliver this year's graduation address on May 11.

On Sunday, May 11th, David Remnick will take the stand as the commencement speaker for the Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry class of 2014 graduation ceremony. Remnick, editor of The New Yorker and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, has been selected by a committee of students, staff, faculty, alumni and others who are involved with Syracuse University.

Commencement closes out the school year and college careers for more than 6,000 Syracuse and SUNY-ESF students.

For more than 6,000 college students, years of classroom lectures, life lessons and newfound friendships culminated Sunday at Syracuse University's 159th Commecement.

The annual ceremony brought thousand of family members and friends to the Carrier Dome to cheer on students from SU, the school's College of Law and SUNY's College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Students at the 158th annual commencement ceremony in the Carrier Dome on May 13 utilized social media outlets such as Twitter and YouTube to document the ceremony that honored more than 5,000 graduates.

An air of anticipation was felt as students, families and faculty entered the Carrier Dome for the annual spring commencement. This year, the university awarded diplomas to 5,056 Syracuse University students, as well as 637 students from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Chancellor Nancy Cantor was greeted with abundant applause to preface her address to the graduating students. However, the highlight of the ceremony was undoubtedly the speech delivered by honored commencement speaker, Aaron Sorkin.
