Sarina Morales, now an on-air contributor for SportsCenter:AM, spoke on race, gender, and sports as the commemorative speaker for Latino/Hispanic Heritage Month.

She was the only girl on her baseball team. Her dream — to play centerfield for the New York Yankees.

As she gets up to bat in front of a huge crowd of people in the Bronx, most of whom have come to scope her out to see if she can really play, the opposing team sits down on the field. The opposing team didn’t believe in her, and her own team didn’t cheer her on either.

The pitcher threw her a soft toss, she took it, and she didn’t quit. She went home, cried and grew a thick skin.

The Syracuse alum spoke to students about her career, the future of women in the play-by-play booth.

Beth Mowins has called a lot of games during her career as a broadcaster, but one stands out more than any other.

She can vividly recall every detail of the night she met NBA legend Michael Jordan while working for NBA Radio.

"Michael walked over and shook my hand," Mowins said with a smile. "This is the most famous person in the world, and then to be able to sit courtside and Michael's running up and down the floor... that was one of my ultimate highlights."

Syracuse head football coach sets season goal of eight victories during ESPN visit Monday.

Syracuse clawed its way to a bowl game last season, the school's first in the ACC, but head coach Scott Shafer is expecting even more in 2014.

Shafer joined Florida State's Jimbo Fisher, Louisville's Bobby Petrino and four other ACC coaches as part of ESPN's mid-summer "car wash" on Monday. The annual event invites coaches from around the country to appear across multiple platforms at the network's Bristol, Conn., headquarters.

Students and faculty packed the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium Friday when three ESPN baseball personalities visited the Newhouse School.

“There are really two reasons I am where I am in life,” said Jayson Stark ‘73, a graduate of the Newhouse School. “One is because I’m one of those lucky people in the world who is doing exactly what I dreamed of doing since I was nine years old. And the second reason I am here today is because I went to Syracuse.”
