Duke Blue Devils

The Orange fell to No. 5 Duke in a controversial ending.

Syracuse was on top of the college basketball world after a 25-0 start to the season and No. 1 ranking. Now the Orange (25-2, 12-2 ACC) are amid a two-game losing streak and facing a drop in the polls after a 66-60 loss at Duke (22-6, 11-4 ACC) Saturday.

A rematch of one of the best games of the year lacked the offensive firepower of the first contest at the Carrier Dome. The Orange shot just 38.7 percent, hitting 24-of-62 field goals. The Blue Devils hit 47.9 percent of their shots, but were relatively quiet from three-point range, hitting 7-of-21 shots from beyond the arc.

An inefficient C.J. Fair combined with a deadly three-point barrage by the Golden Eagles ended SU's undefeated season.

Luck isn’t everlasting, and Syracuse found that out the hard way Wednesday night when it lost in overtime Boston College, 62-59. The loss is the first for the Orange after they started the season winning the first 25 games in a row, one of them coming against the Golden Eagles last month.

“I’m really happy that we’ve won 25 games,” head coach Jim Boeheim said. “That’s a great thing, but we can’t be thinking about that.”

Rece Davis, Jalen Rose, Digger Phelps and Jay Bilas pumped up a crowded SU student section eight and a half hours before the Orange take on Duke at 6:30 p.m.

If the Syracuse-Duke game Saturday night is the main course, than ESPN College GameDay was the appetizer. Hundreds fans packed the stands behind the GameDay desk, cheering and screaming with signs and banners, creating one of the loudest and entertaining atmospheres on ESPN's weekly college basketball morning show.

"I don't know how many people there were," Jay Bilas said after the show, "but there were a lot."

After losing to Duke in the 2013 division 1 men's lacrosse championship, Syracuse has the makings of team ready for another title run, with depth on offense and defense.

A loss in the national title game isn’t something you ever forget, ever truly get over, especially not when a 6-1 lead against Duke evaporates, as face-off after face-off went the other way, the Orange’s offense forced to simply watch their season slip away.

Nearly eight months later, and the end seems like almost yesterday.

The Orange used two second-half goals to tie and snap a four-game losing streak.

On a cool, windy afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium, the Syracuse Orange (4-5) took on the No. 18 Duke Blue Devils (4-4-1) for the first time in franchise history.  The Orange looked to snap a four game losing streak while the Blue Devils just came off a loss against No. 3 Wake Forest.  Both teams were looking to rebound in what was also the first ACC home game for SU, but only came out with a 2-2 draw.

After a strong 5-0 start, SU's inability to win faceoffs and overpower Duke led to the 16-10 loss.

PHILADELPHIA - It happened all season: Syracuse would get dominated in faceoffs, but its efficient offense and strong goaltending helped compensate for the fewer possessions.

But in the National Championship matchup against Duke, the Orange’s inability to win a faceoff became too much to overcome. After a 5-0 start by the Orange, top-seeded Syracuse (16-4) was outscored 16-5, as its quest for a 12th national championship ended in a 16-10 loss to seventh-seeded Duke (16-5).

Less than 24 hours before Syracuse faces Duke in the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Division 1 National Championship, head coach John Desko and a few players talk to the media.

On Saturday, a Derek Maltz rebound goal capped a comeback that sent the Orange to the national championship game.
