Doug Marrone

April 19, 2010 - 6:17pm
After the annual spring football game, the Syracuse Orange look ready for the second year of the Marrone Era.

Ryan Nassib may have been the starting quarterback for Syracuse in the annual Spring Game, but he knows all too well that he isn’t guaranteed that spot come fall.

Nassib was named SU’s starter early last spring, but then Greg Paulus arrived forcing him into a backup role. This year he may be competing with sophomore Charley Loeb, who proved he is worthy of a look from head coach Doug Marrone and his staff after Saturday’s Spring Game.

With recruits on the sideline and the parents in the stands for Senior Day, Syracuse dominated No. 25 Rutgers, 31-13.

The state of Syracuse football, and the status of the health care system in the United States, has run a similar path.

Hype and hope surrounded the hiring of Marrone (an alum and successful NFL coordinator), as well as the election of President Barack Obama (a community leader with pointed ideas and a lasting voice). Today, the products of both men move forward toward its goal after adversity, using solid footing and some timely motivation to invigorate the masses once more.

“Bad stuff happens but you have to keep positive and keep moving forward.” - SU running back Delone Carter on his red zone fumble.

With all eyes on the backup quarterbacks coming into Saturday’s Big East football game between fifth-ranked Cincinnati and Syracuse, the Bearcats rode the plays of its second-string signal caller, Zach Collaros, to a 28-7 victory in the Dome before an announced Halloween attendance of 33,802 on Saturday afternoon.

Halftime Snack breaks down the Orange's final score against Akron.

With a 21-14 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, the Orange took advantage of the 40-pound average advantage on the offensive line. A 53-yard run by senior running back Delone Carter gave the Orange second-and-goal from the 4-yard line. Syracuse simplified its attack, putting quarterback Greg Paulus under center (two shotgun snaps earlier in the day had gone awry) while bringing in both tight ends into the single-back formation.

Carter got the hand off, ran behind big right tackle Jonathan Muldrum into the end zone for his third rushing touchdown of the game.

Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone preaches preparation, expecting each Orange player to be ready to perform at all times.  Saturday afternoon against Akron, Marrone found out if his players were listening.

The star of Syracuse football past visits the Carrier Dome for the first time since graduation.

Many years have passed since the sounds of possibility and admiration swirled amid the Syracuse football fans exiting the Carrier Dome.

More amazing, this Saturday these sounds were after a loss.  The pre-season hype generated by the of hiring new head coach Doug Marrone even prompted former quarterback Donovan McNabb to return to his alma mater for the first time since departing for the NFL in 1999.  Hear what Super Five had to say.

A near capacity crowd turned out to watch the kickoff of the Doug Marrone era.

Doug Marrone's tenure as Syracuse University head football coach began Saturday against Minnesota, and the Carrier Dome was nearly packed with a reported crowd of 48,614.

After the recent disappointing seasons, fans were treated to a solid effort by SU, which led Minnesota 20-17 for most of the second half. Late in the fourth quarter Minnesota tied the game at 20, and ultimately won 23-20 in overtime.

The Syracuse University football program adjusts to life under a new head coach.

Syracuse University’s Football team wrapped up spring practice April 18 with the annual spring game. While the game showed off all of the changes implemented in the playbook, the players are seeing changes around the program and with themselves.

Some players are changing positions, like Andrew Robinson—once the team's quarterback, he is now a backup tight end. Eight different players have left the program since the arrival of head coach Doug Marrone.
