James Corner talks development and landscape at the final University Lectures Series

Renowned architect reflects on how design and development can bring people together.

This semester’s University Lectures series wrapped up with a presentation from internationally renowned architect James Corner. Corner, founder and director of Field Operations in New York City, discussed the importance of architecture and why it is environmentally, socially and economically relevant to urban development.

Corner began the lecture by walking the audience through traditional landscape and architecture styles, pointing out the basics like the scenic and visual aspects.

Syracuse Fashion Week Gala brings a lavish evening for locals

An interactive runway experience dazzled the crowd at the Syracuse Fashion Week Gala.

Pushing theatrics to the brink, the Syracuse Fashion Week Gala at The Landmark Theatre on Friday night was a cross-section of styles both on and off the runway.

Syracuse Fashion Week founder and theater maven Lisa Marie Butler gave designers and boutiques the freedom to make their time on the runway an interactive performance for the audience.

Student entrepreneur sews his way to success

Syracuse University student Jacob deHahn creates his handmade products and runs his own business.

Inspiration can come from anywhere. It was the spring of 2015 and Jacob deHahn, 19, was browsing Tumblr and texting. He saw a photo of crochet bands with words on them online while he texted his friend a peace hand emoji. In that moment, he was inspired to create his first patch. He sewed it by hand, and it was of a peace hand emoji. It’s still attached to his backpack today.

deHahn taught himself how to sew when he continued making patches that summer. In June, he started his own business: Jake’s Patches.

Fairy tale meets fashion at 'While You Were Sleeping' runway show and fundraiser

Stylish shoppers and fashion mavens enjoy a fairy tale fashion show at the While You Were Sleeping event on Sunday to benefit Syracuse City Ballet.

Syracuse’s most stylish and best dressed residents convened downtown on Sunday for “While You Were Sleeping,” a local fashion, shopping and fundraising event.

The event was a collaboration between Syracuse City Ballet (SCB) and Kellie Gingold, the owner of Showoffs Boutique and the main coordinator of While You Were Sleeping.

VPA’s design program moves fashion forward

SU alumna Emme Aronson’s initiative, Fashion Without Limits, works to change the conception of body size in high fashion.

The first limit that Syracuse University alumna Emme Aronson’s initiative, Fashion Without Limits, ran into was mannequin size. Emme approached SU professor Jeffrey Mayer about offering students an opportunity to create clothes for the size 16 model.

“I said, ‘Well, the problem we are going to have is that our dress forms are all size 6 or 8,’” Mayer said.

TEDx SyracuseUniversity inspires students

The inaugural conference featured 15 speakers, including Mayor Stephanie Miner, with ideas worth spreading.

The first TEDx Syracuse University conference, held on April 9 in the Newhouse School, left students feeling inspired and hopeful.

“It was awesome. I can’t think of another word for it,” said Brian Deaver, a first-year law student at SU. “It’s incredible.”

TED, which stands for technology, entertainment and design, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading “ideas worth sharing.” Since 1984, the organization has hosted speaker events to encourage audience members to see the world differently.
