If Syracuse wants to make it all the way to New Orleans for the Final Four, then they'll have to get by these teams

On Sunday, 68 teams were fortunate to make the esteemed NCAA tournament. As expected, the Orange was awarded a No. 1 seed in the East region.

Let’s take a look at who SU could potentially matchup against in the East and how much of a threat they are to end the Orange’s magical season.

16 Seed - UNC Asheville

The Scoop - A 16 seed has never beaten a 1 and this game won’t change that. UNC Asheville has good guards and gave the UNC Tar Heels a run for their money in the first half, but Syracuse is just too talented.

Sophomore guard Dion Waiters scored a career-high 28 points, but it wasn't enough as Cincinnati knocked off the top-seeded Orange.

Every bounce went the Bearcats’ way on Friday night at Madison Square Garden in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament. Cincinnati started its game against top-seeded Syracuse on a tear, making 8-of-10 three-pointers, hustling for loose balls and taking the Orange out of their desired pace. Syracuse used a full-court press in the second half and some timely shooting to cut the lead, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit, losing 71-68.

What to watch for as the Big East gets set for tip-off at its end-of-the-year tournament at Madison Square Garden.

The Favorite - Syracuse

No one in the Big East combines raw ability with length and athleticism like the Orange do.

The Dark horse - Cincinnati

The Bearcats have the guards to make a run and create mismatches with their small lineup.

Knocked out early - Notre Dame

Had a big win over SU, but ND relies too much on the long ball. If they're not falling the Irish will have a short stay in New York City.

Syracuse overcame a 10-point second-half deficit but didn't have an answer for Cincinnati's late game heroics

The Syracuse women’s basketball team (13-9, 2-6) fell to Cincinnati (10-11, 1-7) 55-54 in the Carrier Dome on Saturday night. Senior forward Iasia Hemingway led the Orange with 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists, but it wasn’t enough as Bearcats senior guard Bjonee Reaves hit a jumper with 2.5 seconds remaining in the game to hand the Orange their second straight loss.

No. 4 Orange rebound with a win two days after its first loss

On the heels of their first loss of the season, No. 4 Syracuse (21-1, 8-1) was able to outlast Cincinnati (15-6, 5-3) Monday night at Fifth Third Arena 60-53 in SU coach Jim Boeheim’s 877th career victory. With the win, Boeheim passes Adolph Rupp for the fourth most wins by a NCAA Division 1 coach.

News and notes from Syracuse University's crushing loss to the University of Cincinnati, 30-13.

Here’s my recap of the game, a 30-13 defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Bearcats (8-3, 4-2 Big East). “Obviously, I’m upset.

After a win against West Virginia, it seemed like Syracuse could make the BCS. With their fourth straight loss, though, the Orange are now one loss away from missing the postseason.

It seems that so much time has passed since Syracuse (5-6, 1-5 Big East) dominated West Virginia in the Carrier Dome. During that 47-20 beat down, the Orange controlled all three phases of the game so completely that it didn’t seem far-fetched to have the team as the BCS representative from the Big East. Just over a month ago, the Orange completed a dream drubbing of the Mountaineers to move the team to 5-2 on the season.

An injury depleted Villanova Wildcats team toppled the favored Syracuse Orange in Radnor, Pa. Tuesday night, securing its first Big East victory of the season.

With key players missing due to a rash of injuries, Villanova was able to dig deep and jump out to an early lead.  Villanova (12-11, 1-9) maintained the lead with disciplined play and impressive shooting from beyond the arc, putting four players in double figures to beat Syracuse, 83-69, at the Pavilion.

Fifth-ranked Cincinnati comes to the Carrier Dome for a noon Big East game. The top offense in the country gets the fast surface against a porous Orange defensive backfield.

The day of ghouls, witches and ghosts is upon the SU football team.
