Key misses by Rakeem Christmas and Michael Gbinije down the stretch allow the Hurricanes to escape with another conference victory.

Syracuse was forced to erase a double-digit deficit against Miami twice on Saturday, and it succeeded both times with an array of contested three-point field goals and a yeoman’s effort in the paint by center Rakeem Christmas. 

But when presented with easy points at the free throw line, the Orange showed nowhere near as much resolve and let both comebacks go to waste.

With Rakeem Christmas battling foul trouble, the Orange's secondary scoring options led the team to a rebound win.

For 17 minutes of Syracuse’s game against Boston College, Orange center Rakeem Christmas found himself in an unfamiliar place:  the SU bench.  

Syracuse’s leading scorer couldn’t escape foul trouble on Tuesday night, but his teammates stepped up in his absence.  Four other Orange players scored in double figures to lead the Orange (14-5, 5-1 Atlantic Coast) to a 69-61 victory over the Eagles (8-9, 0-5 Atlantic Coast).

The quest for racial equality in America is still far from complete, award-winning radio journalist and former ABC news correspondent Michele Norris told about 2,000 spectators gathered in the Carrier Dome on Sunday in celebration of the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The senior poured in a career-high 35 points as the Orange continued its hot start in conference play.

With freshman forward Chris McCullough now sidelined for the rest of the season, Syracuse will need to move forward without half of its potent one-two punch inside the paint. 

But on Tuesday night against Wake Forest, the other half proved he’s capable of delivering knockout blows all by himself.

The guard's best shooting performance of the season helped set up a dramatic last-second win.

Trevor Cooney and Tyler Roberson couldn’t have picked a better time to have their best games of the season.

As senior center Rakeem Christmas and freshman forward Chris McCullough struggled to stay out of foul trouble against Louisiana Tech, the much-maligned Cooney and Roberson sparked Syracuse (6-3) to a 71-69 win over the visiting Bulldogs that ended the Orange’s two-game non-conference losing streak.

The senior made three shots from beyond the arc in the final minutes to send the Red Storm to a monumental win.

With just under five minutes remaining and his team trailing Syracuse by three points, St. John’s guard Phil Greene IV decided he was going to shoot the ball under any circumstance. 

He simply knew he was going to make a big shot, and he didn’t disappoint when it came time to prove his gut feeling correct. 

The senior buried three shots from beyond the arc and scored 13 points down the stretch to lead the Red Storm to an impressive 69-57 victory over the Orange in front of 24,884 fans in the Carrier Dome on Saturday afternoon. 

Women's basketball: Briana Day's quick start leads the Orange past Penn State

The sophomore led the team with 15 points as SU cruised to another non-conference win.

Despite a shaky start and a horrendous shooting performance, No. 21 Syracuse (6-1) made easy work of unranked Penn State (1-6) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, defeating the Lady Lions 61-39 at the Carrier Dome on Thursday night. 

Sophomore forward Briana Day led the Orange with 15 points, 13 of which came in the first half, and helped build a sizable lead that remained largely unchallenged for the majority of the game. 

Men's basketball: Orange dominates paint again in win over Holy Cross

Rakeem Christmas and Chris McCullough shine as perimeter shooting continues to fail SU.

Syracuse stormed to a post-Thanksgiving win Friday night, defeating Holy Cross, 72-48, in front of 19,167 fans at the Carrier Dome. Senior Rakeem Christmas and his younger counterpart, freshman Chris McCullough, collectively scored 39 points. 

As has been the case so far in 2014, the Orange struggled from the perimeter and did much of its damage (42 points) in the paint.

Last week, entertainment juggernaut AEG Live tipped off local media about an upcoming concert announcement, something they billed as "major."

It doesn't get much more major than Billy Joel.
