SU's Relay for Life raises $90,106 for American Cancer Society

Not even a fire alarm in the Manley Field House could deter participants from raising money for cancer research.

The air in Manley Field House was buzzing with eagerness. Not for a Syracuse basketball game like it did over 35 years ago. This eagerness was to begin walking.

Relay for Life honors cancer fighters and survivors

More than 1,000 students attended the 12th annual overnight event at Syracuse University, which raised $81,000 for research.

Emotions ran high, but students at the 12th annual Relay For Life remained hopeful in the fight against cancer.

After a night of tears, embracing hugs and upbeat activities, donations totaled almost $81,800. More than $10,700 was raised on the day of the event alone.

“We came in with $70,000 from online donations,” said public health junior Kali Kearns, the co-chair for the annual overnight event. “Probably hit $10,000 tonight.”

Hope for a cure to cancer

More than 2,000 students and Syracuse community members helped Relay for Life raise more than $149,000 for cancer research in the Carrier Dome on April 14.

It seems in today’s world, it is nearly impossible to find someone that has not been affected by cancer. Whether it be a family member, a friend or an acquaintance, millions of lives have been touched by the disease. 

Syracuse University students and members of the Syracuse community came out April 14 to fight back against cancer in the 10th annual Relay for Life.

Hundreds filled the Carrier Dome on Saturday, raising more than $175,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Approximately 2,000 people gathered in the Carrier Dome on Saturday night with a story to share on how cancer has affected their friends and family.

The annual Relay for Life event took place from 7 p.m. on Saturday and ran through the night until Sunday morning. The event is a culmination of fundraising efforts that have been taking place since the end of last year’s Relay.

Though funds are still being collected, this year’s Relay has currently raised $175,000.

Thousands of participants attended Syracuse University's ninth annual Relay for Life, raising more than $165,000 for the American Cancer Society.

As the clock ticked closer to 7 p.m., the Carrier Dome was buzzing with excitement as students pitched tents, unfurled sleeping bags and set up activity tables for Syracuse University’s ninth annual Relay for Life.

Syracuse University's eighth annual Relay For Life raises more than $153,000 for cancer research, including $20,000 that night.

The luminarias shone bright green after the lights dimmed in the Carrier Dome. Thousands silently circled the path lit by the small memorials, the only sounds heard from the once rambunctious group being small cries of grief or sighs. Some walked with each other, hand-in-hand or arm-in-arm. Some stopped to sit together by single luminarias made in memory of loved ones. Each could see the words “hope” and “cure” illuminated in the stands.
