Commentary: This fixture in SU's student section reflects on his days cheering on the Orange.

It was one of the biggest days of my life.

The day I became a graduate of Syracuse University. Like many of my classmates that sat around me on the turf of the Carrier Dome, I had many emotions running through my head. I was excited to start the next chapter of my life, and dreading the debt I was about to walk into.

But I also had one other thing on my mind.

The men's soccer team must replace eight starters from last year, while playing its toughest schedule in eight seasons.

Change is inevitable in college athletics. Players have four, maybe five years with a team. And if they are lucky, they have three years of playing together as the core of the team. After that, the team must rebuild. The men’s soccer team at Syracuse University is no exception.

The Orange have to replace eight players next season, which is no small task for any school.

“It is a big challenge this year, because of the turnover in the roster,” said head coach Ian McIntyre.

Since 2003, a dozen Syracuse men's basketball players have left school early for the NBA Draft.

If only Syracuse basketball players had a crystal ball that forecasted how their NBA careers would pan out, maybe – just maybe – they’d avoid the backlash that comes with a professional tenure that doesn’t unfold exactly as planned.

Especially with the recent influx of one-and-done players, athletes are constantly criticized for leaving multiple years of college eligibility on the table in exchange for money in the NBA, D-League or overseas.

Thirteen penalties in total were called, something Cornell head coach Matt Kerwick says was just another day in the office for these two teams.
