Offensive woes give Syracuse its second loss of the season in a 66-60 Valentine's Day defeat by Louisville.

For the second straight game, the Orange took an early double-digit lead, then squandered it in the final minutes. This time, they couldn’t recover.

“You can’t be in all these games and get down to the end and think you’re going to win,” SU head coach Jim Boeheim said. “You’ve got to play better during the game and tonight offensively we just were not good. And I think that’s the bottom line.”

In their final tune-up game before the season opener, the Orange men’s lacrosse team shut down a solid Maryland squad 10-7.

Syracuse’s defensive unit performed admirably in the first half, limiting Maryland’s high-octane offense to just seven shots. Junior goalkeeper John Galloway was solid, allowing only one goal in the half. Junior defender John Lade provided excellent leadership, picking off several passes during key Terrapin possessions and quickly sending the ball back to the offensive side.

After giving up a 16-point second half lead, the Orange buckled down to hang onto its lead and end with a victory against arch-rival UConn.

With the No. 2 national ranking on the line and the extra anticipation of its first meeting with Connecticut since last year's historic six overtime game at Madison Square Garden, Syracuse found a way to fend off its Big East rival yet again in Wednesday's 72-67 nail-biter win at the Carrier Dome.

Rick Jackson led Syracuse with 15 points, while Kris Joseph and Wes Johnson had 14 and 13 respectively. Joseph and Johnson combined to make six straight free throws in the final 33 seconds to help seal the win for the Orange.

The Orange begin their hunt for a third national championship in a row with two exhibition games against LeMoyne College and Hofstra University Sunday at the Dome.

Despite losing senior leaders Kenny Nims, Dan Hardy, and Matt Abbott, the Orange begin the 2010 season with very high expectations. Syracuse is the pre-season No. 1 ranked team in the nation and the consensus pick to win this year’s NCAA tournament. The Orange edged out Duke to claim the top spot in both the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) preseason coaches poll and the NIKE/Inside Lacrosse preseason media rankings.

After a sloppy first half, the Orange battled back to take down the Marquette Golden Eagles on Saturday at the Carrier Dome.

The Orange picked up their fifth Big East victory of the season with a 69-60 win against the Marquette Golden Eagles. Nicole Michael Had a game-high 18 points while Carmen Tyson-Thomas added a career-high 14 points and a game-high 19 rebounds.

Kris Joseph and Arinze Onuaku lead No. 3 Syracuse to a 22-1 record and the team's best start ever with an 85-68 win over Providence.

Prized Syracuse forward Wesley Johnson went down hard to the floor eight minutes into the first half, but the story of the night was reserved for the flight of a sophomore standout and senior staple.

Kris Joseph scored a career-high 23 points and Arinze Onuaku added a season-best 20 as the Orange squashed the Providence Friars 85-68 to improve to a school-best 22-1 record.

“A.O. was the most active he’s been all year,” SU Coach Jim Boeheim said. “He hasn’t been having the kind of year we need from him."

Syracuse continues its 7-game winning streak against rival Georgetown in a boisterous Dome.

Big heads, big names, big blocks and big noise filled the Carrier Dome Monday night.

Unofficial technology (i.e. iPhone applications) measured the crowd volume at 105 decibels on press row, somewhere in the neighborhood of the levels recorded in the Louisiana Superdome for the NFC Championship between the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Loud and proud, that’s the Syracuse Orange fan right now.

The high-flying Syracuse men’s basketball team held off Marquette, 76-71, in Big East action Saturday afternoon, giving returning students a taste of success to come.

The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away –Job 1:21

For the second consecutive Saturday, No. 5 Syracuse let a Big East opponent believe that a miracle comeback was about to occur. It was West Virginia last weekend, and this afternoon the hopeful wore “Marquette” on their jerseys.

Holding a 17-point lead with 3:45 remaining and fans buttoning up their winter coats, the Orange started to make mistakes that led to three-pointers for the Eagles. Marquette got within four points, 75-71, after a Maurice Acker triple with 10 seconds left.

An intramural name not only must reflect the team's personality but also elicits chuckles (and envy) from fellow players.

They know it’s not politically correct. But hey, it rhymes. It’s funny. It’s original.

And here, it’s OK to fashion a slightly offensive, definitely hilarious team name.

So “The Fightin’ Whities” live on. Ironically sporting black T-shirts, the band of Caucasian males participate in the ‘B’ division of intramural basketball.

The name has two meanings. First, they’re all white. Second, they are proudly alluding to underpants, the article of clothing that unites us all.

A staple of the Syracuse skyline for nearly 30 years, the Dome has housed a wide range of memorable moments.

It is a landmark on the Syracuse University campus that has been around for nearly 30 years.  The Carrier Dome opened Sept. 20, 1980, and has been a staple on the Syracuse hill ever since.
