Refugees who traveled miles from their homeland to settle here celebrate their culture through exotic foods and music at a biannual food court.

The mouthwatering aroma of sourdough flatbread, garbanzo stew and lemon basil that filled the air and the vibrant sounds of live Burundian drumming made the Alibrandi Catholic Center feel like a family kitchen from some place exotic. The atmosphere was part of My Lucky Tummy’s biannual pop-up food court, where people from all over the world gathered to share a meal.

Anthony DiMare developed a collapsible sailboat aimed at getting city dwellers on the water.

It all started because of a girl.

It was summer 2012 and Anthony DiMare had met someone at a party two weeks before school ended. He invited himself to go visit her in New York City and wanted to do something special.

“I thought, ‘I’ll take her sailing,’” said DiMare, a recent Syracuse University graduate in mechanical engineering. “Beautiful summer day, 85 degrees, nice, consistent breeze, Statue of Liberty, the sunset. It was going to be great. It was going to be the quintessential romantic thing anyone could ever do.”

Commentary: If you're headed toward a single and potentially miserable Valentine's Day, consider these tricks before you start eating that box of chocolates.

It’s Valentine's Day.

The annual celebration of both love and absolute misery. The most bipolar holiday of all.

Those who are unequivocally in love, love Valentine's Day. Duh, obvious.

Outdoor training in these sub-zero temperatures can be challenging -- but when dressed appropriately, winter workouts can be a real treat for the senses.

The first few months of the year are the perfect time to implement new training goals and healthy changes. But it can be a battle to deal with cold temperatures, shorter days and — for many students — adapting to a new region with abnormally brutal weather patterns.

Luckily for us, Central New York is full of outdoor beauty. When the weather permits, let the outdoors inspire you to pull on some warm clothes and fulfill that New Year’s exercise resolution — and burn off all those holiday cookies you consumed over winter break.

Students pitch tents outside Gate E more than a week before the sold-out, Feb. 1 showdown in the Carrier Dome to establish an SU-Duke rivalry.

Wondering what the Devil they're doing outside?

Students have already set up shop outside the Carrier Dome with the excitement of the Syracuse-Duke men's basketball matchup nearly two weeks before tip-off.

This week's dangerously cold temperatures have temporarily suspended students from camping overnight in the so-called "Boheimburg." But thanks to the student fan club, Otto's Army, those who braved the freezing weather won't lose their place in line for the Feb. 1 game.

Get to know Syracuse, one neighborhood at a time. Up first: Westcott; from pretty parks to several restaurants to organized bike rides, there is plenty to eat, drink, see, do and shop when you tour through Syracuse's "hipster-ville."

EAT + DRINK

When it comes to food in the Westcott area, vegetarians and vegans have nothing to worry about. On Westcott Street alone, you can pretty much eat your way from breakfast to late night bites.

When the store Basic Baby decided to take part in an international Guinness World Records Diaper Changing challenge, dozens of local families came out to support the cause

Removing babies’ soiled, stinky diapers surely doesn't make anyone's list of most pleasant parenting moments.

But a Syracuse couple, Colleen and Josh Fox, found a way to make the best of a smelly situation by making this necessary daily task environmentally by advocating using the old-fashioned cloth diapers.

Growing numbers of ladies are joining Syracuse University campus comedy organizations to bring on the laughs.

Last year, Sarah Schuster was holding one of her first writers’ meetings for the The Kumquat, Syracuse University’s satire news network, when she realized something odd.

“I looked around me and realized I was the only girl in the room,” she said. “I was the person in charge, but, being female, I was clearly a minority.”

Head to one of the many local, bar-hosted events to bond with friends over beer while stepping up your knowledge of pop culture, geography, and American history minutiae.

The buzzy commotion of the bar softened and gazes shot to the front of the room in excited anticipation.

"The 'Seychelles' are a group of islands in what ocean?" Brian Cocca asked the group gathered at Trapper's Pizza in East Syracuse. Teams as small as three or as large as six were crammed around tables laden with drinks, appetizers, free popcorn, and baskets containing the cellphones of all participants. Trivia nights need to take certain precautions in the age of the smartphone.

Syracuse University students sound off on how they're keeping up with fitness ambitions -- and why it's important to stay active.

The Archbold Gymnasium bustles with students working on the weight machines, lifting free weights, and running on the treadmills. Guys watch themselves lift weights with pain on their faces while girls power through their elliptical and treadmill workouts. The image differs greatly from the way the Archbold Gymnasium looked in December, perhaps because of the new year.
