Syracuse-based artist Reina Apraez hosted her solo gallery reception “Romance; Borrowed Verses; Fantastic Death," commenting on how she finds death quirky.

Local artist Reina Apraez, 27, debuted her gallery show “Romance; Borrowed Verses; Fantastic Death” at Pastabilities on Sunday, October 11.  The restaurant, located at 311 S. Franklin St., has been a fixture for downtown Syracuse-based artists and foodies alike.  Now, Apraez can add her name to the extensive list of artists that have graced the popular establishment’s brick walls.

"Three Graces: Polly Apfelbaum, Tony Feher and Carrie Moyer" made their appearance at the Everson Museums Opening Night reception where the three artists discussed the meanings behind their work.

In Greco-Roman mythology, the three Graces were minor deities personifying joy, wonder and beauty.  These qualities were believed to comprise the core of creativity in Classical history.  Since then, artists have been painting and sculpting these divine figures.

Young-Woo Koh, an Apple aficionado, considers his 26 Apple products as more than mere devices.

You might not think winter is the perfect time for Apple picking, but Young-Woo Koh, a Syracuse University senior IST major, discovered the most appetizing “Apple” this winter: the special edition of an iPod Nano 1st generation. He picked it this winter, putting the number of his Apples at 26 total: 12 iPod Nanos, 3 iPod Touches, 4 iPod Classics, 3 iPads, 3 iPhones and 1 iPod Shuffle. Carefully arranging his 12 iPod Nanos by their generational timeline (seven generations total), Koh proudly presented his collection to me.

Chinese Student and Scholar Association hosted Spring Festival Gala at Goldstein Auditorium to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

As the Lunar New Year, a massive New Year celebration in China and most Asian countries that comes this month, the Chinese community at Syracuse University celebrated the festival together on February 13 at Goldenstein Auditorium in Schine Student Center.

Joyce Corrigan, who has excelled in the fashion industry, talked about her career path, how she got to the top and what those who want to succeed have to do.

Joyce Corrigan, contributing editor at Marie Claire and author of Dress Skinny: Perfecting Your Style, Flattering Your Body, and Looking Fabulous, started her presentation off with a motivational quote. 

“Whether I was working at Marie Claire or Elle, you were always excited to get to work,” she said. The passion Corrigan has is shown through her face, gesticulations and utter humor.

Two months ago, Zaw Thin Nyein relocated to Syracuse from Hawaii; now, he is one of the five home chefs featured in the sixth My Lucky Tummy popup food court.

On Saturday night, people gathered at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, taking a bite of the world. Meanwhile, more than being a food court, My Lucky Tummy provides the attendees a space to “meet people and have some conversations,” said Adam Sudmann, founder of My Lucky Tummy.

How Greek life helps prepare young women to launch successful careers.

In the fall of 2008, Macia Batista, a junior at Le Moyne College, attended a women’s panel on human trafficking at Syracuse University. After the event, Batista sought out the familiar face of the woman who led the event. To Batista’s surprise, the woman, Joannie Diaz, was her high school classmate. But this woman was about to become much more to her. In just a few months, Batista would call Diaz her sorority sister, and fast forward six years later and she is now Batista’s business partner.

Freshman Dez Rivas plans to undergo surgery to alter her male physical appearance to fit her female identity.

Several trips to the doctor and weeks of shooting hip pain revealed a harsh reality: with surgery comes risk for some transgender people.

Dez Rivas, 20, endured the sharp pain in her infected hip after her body rejected a liposuction treatment. She wanted to add feminine curves without artificial implants.

Instead, she lost 75 percent of the fat moved in the procedure.

“The pain is starting to going away progressively, but I was still in pain when I went back in August for work,” Dez said. “Even to this day I still get little pains where the scars are.”
