Election volunteers, first-time voters aim to make a difference in 2016 election

Democracy in Action students cover the local and national races across Central New York.

Dawayne Kirkland, a first-time voter who originally supported Bernie Sanders, but voted for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, said his decision to come to the polls was influenced by music artist, Chance the Rapper.

“I think my generation, we really do care about this kind of stuff,” Kirkland said.  “Maybe not from the mediums that you would expect us to get the information from. I’m not paying attention to CNN, but I am checking my Twitter. He’s a social influencer that had an influence on me to get up and go vote and see if I can make a difference.”

Syracuse Snare Quidditch Club travels to PA for festival and tournament

Syracuse University's quidditch team participates in the annual Brotherly Love Quidditch Cup and Harry Potter Festival.

The sound of John Williams’ compositional strings played in the air. Adults and children alike dressed in costumes of wizards, prison mates, owls, and muggles. And ten athletic teams competed against each other on PVC pipes at Chestnut Hill College on October 22. This could only amount to the annual Brotherly Love Quiddtich Cup and Harry Potter Festival.

CSA hosts annual Caribfest

This year's Caribfest included a pageant, fashion show, and dance performances.

Syracuse University’s Caribbean Student Association began its celebration of its 30th year on campus with its annual Caribfest pageant and concert.

The pageant crowned Mr. and Miss Caribfest 2016 out of five Caribbean hopefuls. Contestants used the segments of the pageant to show why they deserve to represent the Caribbean Islands on the Syracuse University Campus.

Central New York artist Edgar Paiewonsky-Conde explains his latest art presentation, “Icons and Eye Poems.”

Edgar Paiewonsky-Conde has a full head of white hair that cascades down into an equally-full and white beard. The whiteness is only slightly broken up by an all-linen, cream jacket and pants, with an aqua blue linen shirt. His words, soft and thoughtful, are accented with the sound of the Dominican Republic – his home long before he lived in Manlius. His handshake is firm and his eyes are endearing when he asks, “Do you know what a GIF is?”

Campus die-in demonstrators honor black lives lost

The midday protest drew hundreds of onlookers to the university Promenade in an effort to challenge police brutality.

Syracuse University students staged a “Die-In” Wednesday afternoon at the Promenade where dozens of participants fell to the ground to raise awareness about recent police killings of unarmed black men across the country.

Starting at 12:30 p.m., the students laid still for 10 minutes to represent the fact that only 10 of the 102 cases of unarmed black people killed by police in 2015 resulted in officers being charged with a crime, according to a statement from organizers.

Review: Prior to University Union announcing the headliner hadn't show up, concertgoers enjoyed performances from LOLO, Stephen, Marshmello, D.R.A.M. and Tove Lo during a cloudless day.

The fans waited.

And waited.

But eventually, University Union announced Juice Jam headliner Fetty Wap hadn't shown up, and instructed everybody at Skytop Field on South Campus to  go home.

For National Magazine Award winner Don Belt, good storytelling is as easy as taking a walk.

Award-winning National Geographic contributor Don Belt instructs his students at the University of Richmond to walk outside and make a map of what they see. They take photos. They ignore the age-old saying “don’t talk to strangers.” This is what Belt calls “taking a walk,” and it is what he encouraged Syracuse students to do at a lecture in the Hergenhan Auditorium this Thursday in a lecture titled “Slow Journalism: Integrating Digital into Traditional Storytelling.”
