Community proposes pump track at Syracuse art park

Lipe Art Park would become the home to a new biking, skateboarding, rollerblading, and scooter pump track.

Members of the volunteer group Pump Track SYR, are working towards finalizing the building plans of Syracuse’s first ever outdoor pump track, and hope to start construction next year.

The pump track would be installed in Lipe Art Park on West Fayette Street. The track can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and it will facilitate biking, skateboarding, rollerblading, and scooter use due to the unique nature of its design.

Six hours into the doubles tournament of the Third Annual New York State Cornhole Championship in Liverpool's Holiday Inn ballroom, title sponsor Jim Willey stepped out from under the blue tailgating tent that served as event headquarters and grabs a microphone.

Willey, a towering man with broad shoulders who wears a custom T-shirt with his name across the back, begins to speak. The deafening melody of thudding beanbags fades as more than 40 cornhole players turn toward him.

The American climate conundrum

SU students from across the country represent the United States' divided perceptions of climate change.

For Eric King, learning about climate change for the first time was a confusing experience. His eighth grade science class in Columbus, Ohio, was taught two different theories: First, that the changes in weather patterns were part of the natural rhythms of the Earth and not connected to human actions, and second, that climate change was a consequence of greenhouse gas emissions and other human activities. 

 “At the end people walked out saying ‘well no one really knows what’s going on,’” the magazine journalism senior said.

Students interested in emerging technologies are creating original content for Syracuse and beyond.

Scattered around table are artifacts from the future-turned-present – Google cardboards, virtual reality headsets, and a round 360-degree camera. The drones to the left look like flying robotic spiders and a shiny black contraption in the next corner involves more sensors and gear than any non-engineering club might even consider possible. One student puts on a headset that completely obscures his natural vision, but takes him into another world instead.

It started with a concerned skepticism:

"There's no way he missed his flight that's just a rumor."

Then some worried, misguided ramblings:

"How did University Union f— this up again?"

Then, finally, the confused, manic outrage:

"What are we gonna do? How will they save Mayfest? I'm coming down!"

The changing landscape of Marshall Street

Now that Hungry Chuck's closed and Orange Crate Brewing Co. is moving, students and the greater community are feeling the effects of the Marshall Street area's changing nightlife scene.

Three male students strolled slowly down the Syracuse University promenade, backpacks on as they headed home from campus after a long Tuesday of classes. An orange April sunset cast a long shadow ahead of them as they talked, laughed and discussed their plans for the evening.

“You going out tonight, bro?” one student asked another.

“I definitely want to. I mean, how many nights do we have left?” the second responded.

“I mean, but where are we going to go?”

Parker continues hot scoring streak in ACC tournament for Syracuse women's lacrosse

SU senior Devon Parker has scored in eight of the past nine games in what has been a career year for the attacker.

Devon Parker walked along the SU Soccer Stadium field with her parents by her side and a smile blooming on her face. Recognized on Senior Day, she was welcomed with applause from a thousand Syracuse University women's lacrosse fans.
