Review: With a Samoan dance style, Black Grace brought talent and tradition to Goldstein Auditorium for a night filled with cultural.

It may have been a snowy Monday night in Syracuse, but that didn’t stop people in the community from coming out to see New Zealand’s leading contemporary dance group, Black Grace, perform their athletic and traditional repertory.  

“We love seeing live dance and there’s not many opportunities in Syracuse to see it. So, whenever we have an opportunity, we try to see it,” Sarah Saulson of Syracuse, who attended the event with her husband Peter, expained.

Review: 'In the Next Room, or the vibrator play' a 'must see' for anyone interested in women’s sexuality or life during the Victorian Era, will run through Feb. 15 at the Syracuse Stage.

In the Next Room, or the vibrator play was written by Sarah Ruhl to depict a multi-faceted look into family life in the Victorian Era.

Hardly uncomfortable by nature, the play was funny, poignant and shockingly accurate, as it worked through the trials and triumphs of identifying sexual pleasure at a time when sexuality was anything but.

Set in a spa town in the late 19th century, the play had one setting, the interior of an upper middle class Victorian home, next to the small doctor’s working space known as “the next room.”

Tula Goenka’s new book, Not Just Bollywood: Indian Directors Speak, offers a rare glimpse of the largest movie business of the world, its sheer diversity and contemporary trends.

Goenka, a filmmaker and professor of film production, goes behind the scenes to paint the scene. She interviews 28 leading Indian directors to talk about films from the filmmaker’s point of view.

On the cusp of its 40th anniversary, the Syracuse Opera's concert performance of the classic American opera brings communal jubilation and joy.

Opera originating on American soil is a rare breed. With the theaters saturated with the tradition of show tunes, vaudeville and musical theater, the European high art of opera has struggled to gain a popular foothold with both artists and audiences. 

But between the beginning of the early 20th century and the end of World War II, the genre lines between popular stage entertainment (theater, vaudeville, musicals and opera) were never more ambiguous and interchangeable.

The Thrillin’ Theta Xi chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., brought J. Cole to campus Friday as part of their “Friday Night Lights: Culture for Service Benefit Concert.” Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Elle Varner and Bas, a member of Cole’s Dreamville record label, opened the show.

The benefit concert raised more than $70,000 in funds for Phi Beta Sigma’s philanthropies, including, but not limited to: March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, Natural Relief Funds, and local organizations.
