Toronto International Film Festival offers promising slate of fall films

An arts journalism grad student returns from the Toronto International Film Festival with his pick of the festival’s most exciting movies

This year, Syracuse University graduate students from the Goldring Arts Journalism program traveled from Syracuse to Toronto to attend the 42nd annual Toronto International Film Festival. Here is a roundup of some of the notable movies that one student saw:

Hotel Garuda, Sam Feldt turn opening Bandersnatch into dance party

Review: EDM DJs Hotel Garuda opened and Sam Feldt finished what was truly a memorable sold-out Bandersnatch concert.

Virtually every song Sam Feldt played during University Union’s first Bandersnatch concert of the year was met with dancing from the college kids that came to see the 23-year-old perform.

An aura of happiness followed the young DJ, who headlined the concert Wednesday night. Feldt performed for well over an hour, periodically slowing down the current song he was mixing to thank the audience. His presence and masterful mixing impressed everyone in the room.

James Franco shares behind-the-scenes stories, career advice during Orange Central visit

The actor spoke to a sold-out crowd about his acting career, heroes and pitfalls during Orange Central's "An Evening With James Franco."

While students welcomed James Franco's on-set anecdotes, it was the actor and filmmaker's advice to young creatives that was deemed most valuable. Speaking to a sold-out crowd in Goldstein Auditorium Saturday night, Franco said the best way to sharpen creative talent is to carve out a little time every day to work on it.

“Just do it,” Franco said. “If you want to be good at something, why not do it obsessively?”

Music industry grad connects downtown musicians

Syracuse transplant Max Puglisi fell in love with his city after fostering a community of creativity at downtown jam sessions.

Max Puglisi spent three years in the city of Syracuse before he started living in it.

While studying music industry at Syracuse University, Puglisi didn’t like the city he was in. Once he finally left the Hill his senior year, though, he said he fell in love.

“It never really seemed like anything was going on here until I got down there,” said Puglisi, who grew up in Rochester. “And then, all of a sudden, these past two years, Syracuse has blown up in terms of culture.”

Students celebrated the end of the school year with a passion for good music at Syracuse University's annual Carrier Dome concert.

More than 13,000 people bounced up and down for four hours at the Carrier Dome on Friday to the tunes of Jon Bellion, Chance the Rapper and The Chainsmokers. Fans were excited for the concert, pushing their way as close to the barrier between the stage and audience before any performer was even on stage.

VPA MFA Show: None the Wiser

Syracuse University graduate students exhibit collection of artwork in Shaffer Art Building.

The annual exhibition of the Master of Fine Arts thesis candidates from the College of Visual and Performing Arts opened on Thursday.

This year’s exhibition, titled None the Wiser, featured the work of 27 artists who created works of art in a variety of disciplines from sculpture and painting to digital art, virtual reality and music.

The works of art addressed a wide range of contemporary discourse such as human waste and consumption, sustainability, democracy and black feminism through visual, auditory and textual media.

Actor Anthony Anderson talks Hollywood and hope to SU community

Alpha Phi Alpha hosted the 5th annual presentation of "Truth Be Told," which brought Anderson to Goldstein Auditorium.

Actor, comedian, and writer Anthony Anderson visited Syracuse University to speak about hit TV show "Black-ish" and his upcoming movie, BARBERSHOP: The Next Cut, premiering in theaters on April 15, 2016. The discussion focused on the "Black-ish" episode "Hope" which commented on racial injustices in society.

Fabolous and Dj Premier Headline Greek Unity Fest

Fabolous and Premier performed for a sold-out crowd on the eve of the Orange's appearance in the Final Four.

Concertgoers filled Syracuse University’s Goldstein Auditorium on April 1, 2016 for the Greek Unity Fest concert.

Those who attended came to see New York City’s Legendary Dj Premiere and MC Fabolous headline a hip-hop showcase that featured performances by local djs, rappers, and Greek lettered sororities and fraternities that attend SU.

Milan, an upcoming rapper from Bronx, N.Y., hyped up the audience first. Her energetic set kept the audience engaged right before one of the headliners went on.

Dr. Dre-affiliated Anderson .Paak and The Free Nationals bring energy to Schine Underground

.Paak and his band, along with hip-hop artist SMINO, performed as part of University Union's Bandersnatch Series.

Concertgoers assembled in Syracuse University’s Schine Underground on March 23 to witness the performance of a Dr. Dre protégé from Oxnard, California. 

Anderson .Paak, the star of the show, was in town fresh off a critically acclaimed performance at SXSW in Austin, Texas. He took the stage around 9:30 p.m. dressed in red from head to toe, including fresh black and red Adidas sneakers, as well as a Tony Montana “Scarface” T-Shirt.
