Sports marketing executive visits

Syracuse University Alum and founder and chairman of Steiner Sports Marketing to speak at SU on Tuesday.

Brandon Steiner has done business with Derek Jeter, Joe Torre and Eli Manning.  Tuesday, he will return to his alma mater (class of 1981) and speak  about his experiences in the world of sports.

Steiner is the founder and chairman of Steiner Sports Marketing, the largest collectible inventory business of its kind in the U.S.  His visit is sponsored by the David B. Falk Center for Sports Management and is part of a series of guest speakers presented for the students of the Sports Management Club.

Gilbert Arenas avoids jail time for gun charge

Plus, 11 people killed in an accident on a Kentucky highway, and Syracuse University and LeMoyne students bring hope to Bellevue Middle School Academy Students.

Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas does not have to serve jail time for a felony gun charge, says ESPN.com. Judge Robert E. Morin says Arenas has to serve 30 days in a halfway house and register as a gun offender.

He was also sentenced to two years of probation, he must do 400 hours of community service, and he has to give $5,000 to victims of the violent crimes fund.

California, in Financial Crisis, Opens Prison Doors

According to the New York Times, California’s multibillion-dollar budget crisis calls for the reduction of prison overcrowding.

With roughly $8 billion, 11 percent of the state budget, going to the penal system, California intends to remove from prison criminals who are considered less threatening.

The goal is to reduce the number of inmates in the state’s prisons next year by 6,500.

Orange you glad it's basketball season

The Syracuse women are 9-0 for the first time since 1974-75, have a national ranking and are now beating NCAA tournament teams.

The Orange (9-0) limited Dartmouth (2-5), the defending Ivy League champion, to 28 percent shooting in a 56-42 victory Sunday afternoon in the Carrier Dome for its 19th consecutive non-conference victory.

Field Hockey hosts cheap Halloween party

The No. 5 ranked Orange field hockey team closes the regular season against Rutgers on Oct. 31; game time is 1 p.m.

After getting tricked in Boston last weekend, the Syracuse field hockey team looks to treat the fans on Saturday.
 
The Orange returns to J.S. Coyne Stadium on Halloween after spending the past two weekends watching the leaves change across the Northeast.
 

Morton record a bit wobbly

Fluctuation in the NCAA volleyball scoring system keeps blocking records from standing on firm ground.

Records can be deceiving.  Such is the case with SU middle hitter Sarah Morton.

According to SU Athletic Communications Office, Morton became SU’s all-time leader in total blocks for a career at Connecticut on Sunday afternoon, passing Jessica Paarlberg ‘ 91.  Morton now has 590 total blocks and also holds three school marks (solo blocks, blocks per set and total blocks).
