Ex-Penn State football coach loses battle with lung cancer

The winningest football coach in NCAA Division I history passed away early today at the Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pa. Joe Paterno coached the Penn State football team for 46 seasons and won 409 games. He was fired by the school two months ago amid a child sex abuse scandal. He was 85 years old.

Chandler Jones will forgo his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft.

After three years and 10.5 sacks, Syracuse defensive end Chandler Jones has decided to forgo his final year of eligibility at Syracuse University and enter the NFL draft. Jones, an All-Big East first team defender from Endicott, N.Y. played in seven games for the Orange this season and registered a team-high 4.5 sacks with 7.5 tackles for loss.

Jones made the announcement via his Twitter account at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

SU puts its 1-0 record on the line as it travels Saturday to face Washington.

Syracuse knows all about Washington quarterback Jake Locker, after all, the Orange hosted his coming out party. In 2007 Locker made his first collegiate start and led the Huskies to a 42-12 rout of the Orange. Saturday, Syracuse is looking to get a little revenge.

Sophomore Chandler Jones remembers Locker's debut well as he was in the Dome cheering for his older brother Art – now a member of the Baltimore Ravens.

SU opens the season with a trip to Ohio to face Akron Saturday.

No more two-a-days, line sprints or walkthroughs. After months of hard work and practice, Syracuse will open the season Saturday at Akron. Coming off a 4-8 season, the Orange are looking to make a statement early.

“This week we’re coming in with the mentality of a big win, not just a little three point score,” said defensive back Shamarko Thomas. “Our defense stop them every time they get on the field, and our offense score every time they get on the field.”

Media Day brought some surprising news as coach Doug Marrone announces that running back Delone Carter was reinstated by the University and the team.

Media Day for the Syracuse Orangemen Football Team started with a jolt on Monday when Head Coach Doug Marrone announced that senior running back Delone Carter had been reinstated by the school. The news was a surprise to everyone including Coach Marrone as he found out only about an hour before the press conference started.

Greg Paulus is hired as basketball assistant at U.S. Naval Academy.

People doubted him, but Greg Paulus has made sports a full-time job.

SU Basketball and football season tickets for students are now available to order.

If you want to be a season ticket holder for the 2010-2011 year, now is the time. New and returning full-time SU and ESF students can officially buy their basketball and football season tickets.

Football season tickets for students are $100. There are five home football games this season, and the purchase comes with a free Otto's Army T-shirt. Student basketball season tickets are $160.

Students who order both basketball and football season tickets, known as the Combo Package, before Aug. 13 get $40 off.

Over 100 million viewers will watch a football game this evening, and the main storyline is centered around Syracuse great Dwight Freeney and his twisted ankle.

The No.1 sporting event in American athletics should be re-named this season. Rather than the call it fancy-old Super Bowl XLIV, it should be the Syracuse Bowl.

The Orange (4-7, 1-5 Big East) plays its final game of the 2009 season at Connecticut (5-5, 1-4) on a wet track in an NFL-size stadium before a sold-out crowd. Any chance of victory rests on the SU running game.

Syracuse football comes to a close Saturday afternoon. Halftime Snack ushers out the old and looks ahead to the new.
