Chancellor will leave SU by January to lead the Newark campus of Rutgers University

Nancy Cantor will be heading to Rutgers-Newark, ending her tenure as Syracuse University chancellor and president months earlier than expected.

The 2013-2014 University Lecture series was announced, and includes luminaries in a number of disciplines as well as a special commemorative lecture for the 25th anniversary of Pan Am Flight 103.

The University Lectures series lineup for the 2013-14 has been announced. Beginning on October 8th, the series will bring 8 speakers to Syracuse University, including Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, New Yorker cartoonist and author Roz Chast, and Senator George J. Michael who will deliver a commemorative lecture for the 25th anniversary of Pan Am Flight 103.

The annual year-end celebration will also feature electronic band Sound Remedy, with a third act TBA.

Los Angeles rapper Earl Sweatshirt will headline this year's Mayfest in Walnut Park on April 26, with support from electronic band Sound Remedy and a third act TBA, University Union announced Sunday night via Twitter.

Earl Sweatshirt is a member of the hip-hop collective Odd Future. He's collaborated with Pharrell Williams, Mac Miller and Tyler, The Creator, and is set to release his second studio album Doris later this year.

The university has organized game viewings of Saturday's Final Four game against Michigan for students at locations throughout campus.

Students will have no excuse to miss Saturday's game against the Michigan Wolverines as the university has announced that it will organize viewing locations throughout campus.

"Last Saturday, our men’s basketball team gave us an exciting victory and a place among college basketball’s 'Final Four,'"Thomas Wolfe, Senior Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs , said in an email sent out to students Wednesday. "This is a time for enthusiasm and camaraderie as we celebrate the University’s tradition of excellence in athletics."

Dean Spade,writer and associate professor of law at Seattle University, spoke on campus Monday about the intertwined issues of gender and other social issues.

Dean Spade stood behind a platform at Watson Theater Monday night to educate the campus community on gender issues intertwined with other social issues, such as poverty, racism and immigration.

Spade is an associate professor of law at Seattle University, teaching administrative law, poverty law, and law and social movements. Also as a lawyer, writer and transgender activist, he gives speeches to different universities on sexual orientation, gender identity and poverty. He mainly focuses on civil rights of LGBT group and people of color.

Benjamin Wagner, SU alumnus and MTV's senior vice president, spoke to students and faculty about his film, Mr. Rogers and Me, and the steps he took to achieve success in his career.

Benjamin Wagner, an SU alumnus, visited campus last week to share on his career in media and for a screening on his new film project, Mr. Rogers & Me, a biopic on the life of television star Fred Rogers.

"I'm a just a dude…a dude who's older than you," Benjamin Wagner, current said to the audience of student and faculty and staff in Crouse Hinds after the viewing of his film Mr. Rogers and Me. Wagner is currently the senior vice president for MTV News.

SU officials announced Sunday that award-winning journalist and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof will be this year's commencement speaker.

Nicholas Kristof, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and opinion columist for the New York Times, will be delivering the commencement speech at Syracuse University and the State University of New York College of Environmental and Science and Forestry's graduaton ceremony May 12.

"Nicholas Kristof personifies so many of our aspirations for our graduating students," Chancellor Nancy Cantor said in a March 3 SU news release.

Jason Morales, who was studying in the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, was completing his senior capstone in NYC.

Jason Morales, a senior in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, died Friday night after he was struck by a car in New York City.

Morales was in New York City to complete his senior capstone project and was interning at St. John’s University, according to an email sent out by Chancellor Nancy Cantor to students, faculty and staff Saturday night.

Morales had been a member of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity where he once served as social chair, according to the email.

A drive to collect canned food will be held during the SU Men's Basketball game against Georgetown Saturday in order to help combat hunger in the local community.

In addition to bringing orange face paint, orange T-shirts and every ounce of school spirit possible to Saturday's Syracuse-Georgetown basketball game, fans are also encouraged to bring a canned food donation for the Can It! food drive.
