The SU women's basketball team almost let the game slip through its fingers, but strong performances by Brittney Sykes and Shakeya Leary helped the Orange win.

In the closing moments of the second half, Washington State erased the Syracuse women’s basketball team’s 11-point cushion and was in striking distance with only 42 seconds left on the clock.

But sophomore guard Brittney Sykes reeled in her first steal of the game and took it to the other end for a layup to push the Orange up four.

The Orange could not overcome an early deficit, falling 4-1 to the Demon Deacons.

Syracuse dropped its final game of the regular season 4-1 to Wake Forest despite Emil Ekblom scoring his team leading 10th goal of the season.

Wake Forest claimed the lead halfway through the first half when Ian Harkes capitalized on the scoring opportunity to put the Demon Deacons up 1-0. Sean Okoli followed up a short time later to put his team up 2-0, a deficit that proved to be difficult for the Orange to recover from.

Syracuse could not score on offense and await its NCAA Tournament seeding.

With just over three minutes remaining, it appeared that No. 2 Syracuse (16-3) had tied up what was a 1-0 North Carolina lead. Jordan Page scored on a drive from outside the circle, but North Carolina appealed. Video review, which was used for the first time in ACC tournament history, showed that the ball was not deflected inside the circle, and the call was reversed.

SU never did overcome the one-goal deficit, and fell to No. 3 North Carolina, 1-0, in ACC field hockey semifinal action.

The Orange scored three unanswered goals to defeat Boston College and move on to play North Carolina.

Three unanswered goals lifted No. 2 Syracuse field hockey over No. 11 Boston College 3-1 in the ACC Championship quarterfinals Thursday afternoon. The win came in the first ever ACC tournament game for the Orange.

The Orange are 2-2-1 over the last five games and have failed to produce much on offense. But if SU wins Friday, it will go into the ACC tournament an 11-6-1 record.

When Syracuse defeated the Clemson Tigers for its biggest victory to date, there wasn’t too much time to celebrate. The Orange (10-6-1) needed to immediately prepare for at least one final road trip against Wake Forest.

A win is necessary to keep its chances of reaching the ACC Tournament. The top eight teams in the regular season will advance to the conference tournament. The Demon Deacons (8-4-5), meanwhile, have already clinched a spot in the postseason and currently hold the third seed in the conference.

The Fighting Irish battled back in the final two sets, but the Orange held strong in a three-set victory and have now won seven of its last nine matches.

The Syracuse University women’s volleyball team returned to the court at the Carrier Dome for one last time this season, and made it count. The Orange grinded out a victory in a mid-week battle against familiar foe Notre Dame.

Syracuse (12-13, 7-6 ACC) succeeded in countering every shift of momentum for Notre Dame (10-14, 4-9 ACC). The Fighting Irish lived up to its name, and kept each set close. However, with two come-from-behind sets, the Orange escaped with a three set victory, by a score of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-23.

November 3, 2013 - 2:31pm
The men won its second straight conference championship and the young women's team placed third.

Different conference, same result for the Syracuse men’s cross country team.

The No. 14 Orange won its second consecutive conference championship Friday, winning the ACC title in Kernersville, N.C., after winning the Big East championship in its final year in the conference last season.

While no team scores were kept and few upperclass raced, some of SU's younger runners showed off their skills at the John Reif Memorial race at Cornell University.

The Syracuse cross country team ran its last regular season race on Friday at the John Reif Memorial at Cornell University, the last meet before the ACC Championship next weekend.

October 27, 2013 - 9:37pm
Syracuse scored four goals and held Boston College to one goal in a big ACC upset.

Senior goaltender Kallie Billadeau called it the biggest win in team history.

While that may or may not be true, there’s no doubt Syracuse (3-4) certainly made a statement against a national powerhouse Friday night.

Sparked by 43 saves from Billadeau and goals from four different skaters, the Orange surged past No. 3 Boston College (5-2), 4-1, in front of 258 fans at Tennity Ice Pavilion.

Neither team could find the back of the net until the 56th minute, when Maryland's Dan Metzger fired the winning goal for the Terrapins.

The Orange men's soccer team (9-5-1, 2-5-1 ACC) hosted No. 12 Maryland (7-3-5, 4-1-3 ACC) in a pivotal conference match-up Saturday. In the end, the Terrapins emerged with a narrow 1-0 victory, courtesy of UMD’s Dan Metzger.
