SU cancels classes in advance of incoming Hurricane Sandy

Classes scheduled after 1:30 p.m. Oct. 29 and for the entire day Oct. 30 are cancelled.

In a weather alert email sent out to all students and faculty earlier this morning, SU has cancelled all classes scheduled after 1:30 p.m. today and for the entire day tomorrow. Classes are expected to resume on a normal schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The cancellations serve as a precautionary measure in advance of Hurricane Sandy, which is forecast to bring heavy rain and sustained winds between 30 to 40 mph and gusts between 45 and 60 mph. Government officials on state and federal levels have recommended that anyone in the path of the storm take the necessary precautions and avoid any unnecessary travel.

University faculty and staff are advised to leave work beginning at 1:30 p.m. today, with normal work hours resuming again on Wednesday morning. Campus services such as food centers, dining halls, public safety and health services will continue as scheduled within their normal operating hours.

The E.S. Bird library is scheduled to close today at 1:30 p.m.

In the event of a loss of power, an Orange Alert will be issued with further instructions for members of the campus community. Students and faculty are advised to check their Orange Alert settings on MySlice.

Additional announcements about the university’s operating status will be posted on the official SU website.
