Making the Rinds: Notes from the court and pitch

SU hoops battles Bears, men's soccer receives votes and volleyball spikes across campus.

Syracuse will have to repeat some of its Maui magic to win the 2014 2K Classic.

The Orange's first opponent in the annual men's basketball tournament will be the California Golden Bears on Nov. 20, according to a Wednesday press release from Syracuse Athletics. Madison Square Garden will play host to the game, which is scheduled to tip-off at approximately 9 p.m.

The two squads met during last season's EA Sports Maui Invitational, and Jim Boeheim and Co. claimed a 92-81 victory en route to the tournament championship. Overall, the Orange holds a 3-0 series advantage over the Bears.

The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Kick-start

Syracuse men's soccer won at least 10 games in each of its last two seasons, and coaches are starting to take notice.

The Orange received eight votes in the 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire Preseason Poll, which was released on Wednesday. SU is ranked No. 38 in the country, tied with Northwestern.

Ian McIntyre's squad is one of eight ACC teams in the poll, including defending national champion Notre Dame.

The Orange returns 12 starters from 2013 and opens preseason training Aug. 13.

Dome Digs

Normally, Jim Boeheim Court is reserved for basketball. But for the third season in a row, the Carrier Dome will have an additional tenant.

Syracuse volleyball will host three matches in the Dome during the 2014-15 season, Syracuse Athletics revealed in a press announcement Wednesday. The Orange will face Louisville on Oct. 17, Wake Forest on Oct. 19 and Virginia Tech on Nov. 26.

SU is previously 3-3 in the Loud House, including two victories against ACC competition.
