Fashion with a conscience: Fashion Week 2009

SU's minority-based fashion organization, Fashion's Conscience, presents its first Fashion Week.

Syracuse University's minority-based fashion organization, Fashion's Conscience, brought an entirely different kind of diversity to it's first Fashion Week show: a wide range of styles, seasons, textiles and shapes.

Looks from four themed segments passed down the runway in the Schine Atrium Thursday night.

Hot Head, a student label, presented hand-crocheted hats and scarves that hinted at the approaching winter temperatures. The colors, patterns and proportions evoked a cozy, ski lodge wearability. These seasonal looks were paired with models in playful, oversized head bows from Ty Liew.

A segment devoted to vintage fashion showed items from two local thrift boutiques, Fashion Exchange and Cluttered Closet. The looks recalled the `70s and `80s, with satin high-waisted pants, sequin-embellished cocktail dresses and long-sleeved boleros.

Graphic printed t-shirts and zip-up hoodies from label Jake Couri lent an urban, youthful vibe in contrast to the other more formal looks. Jake Couri designs are available at J Michaels on Marshall Street.

Closing the show were garments by Fashion's Conscience members Amanda Williams, Amity Paye and Ayoni Warburton. Variety was again essential, as these designers presented both gowns and sportswear separates. At times theatrical, the line aimed for maximum drama through hooded capes, brightly colored polka dot prints and body-conscious silhouettes.

Fashion Week 2009 continues with a mixer and movie Friday from 7-10pm and the Fashion Show Off Saturday 6:30-8pm, both in Shaffer Lobby.
