Students at Syracuse University and SUNY-ESF recount the history of Onondaga Lake through puppets, poetry, music and art.

Geoffrey Navias tends to have a deadpan expression most of the time. But when he dons a mask or works with a puppet, his movements bring the character to life.

“Creative art is a lie,” the artistic director of Open Hand Theater told a room full of Syracuse University and State University of New York Environmental Science and Forestry students on a recent Saturday morning in The Warehouse downtown.  “It’s a lie. It’s not really here.

Graduating seniors reflect on their best times at SU.

Meeting friends for life. Mayfest. Studying abroad. Running naked in the rain. What’s your most memorable college experience?

The short-story author and SU professor appeared to talk and sign books at a local bookstore

A clear consensus emerged among the fans of prolific author George Saunders after his April 26 book signing and lecture at the Eerie Blvd. Barnes & Noble: he is an incredibly funny man. When he read out-loud a selection from "Victory Lap" –- the first short stories from the critically acclaimed collection Tenth of December (2013) –- his exaggerated mimicry and comical voice inflections amused audience members. The cherry-topper of the evening came when Saunders fielded questions from the crowd, sharing hilarious anecdotes on writing and life.

Commentary: Syracuse University senior Jillian D'Onfro describes her last Mayfest and thinks back on past years' celebrations.

I noticed the first sign when I peered out my bedroom window and spotted a rainbow bounce house already shaking and swaying two backyards over. The second sign arrived as my roommate thrust a freshly opened beer into my hand. Next came the beats thumping from nearby speakers, the squeals and yips floating through my open windows as someone started their inaugural game of flip cup and a text from a friend asking what time we would start putting glitter on our faces.

“Happy senior year Mayfest,” my roommate grinned wickedly.

Cleanups aren't the only way to show your love for the planet on April 22. Check out some of these other local events, and you can celebrate Earth Day all week long.

Earth Day is Monday, April 22, but Central New York has started the party for our planet a week early.

Nearly 5,000 volunteers picked up trash last Friday and Saturday in Onondaga County as part of the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency’s Earth Day cleanup. In those two days, they collected over 8,400 pounds of garbage. Cleanups are planned through this week and into the weekend around the county, if you’re looking to help out.
