The broadcaster and former Syracuse student spoke to students and faculty in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium on Tuesday evening.

When Marv Albert was growing up in Brooklyn, he would turn down the audio during sports television broadcasts and do his own play-by-play on a reel-to-reel tape recorder.

He even created a fictitious radio station, WMPA, which was inspired by his initials.

Now 73 years old, that young kid with a made-up radio network has become one of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting.

SU offense struggles in first conference game of season.

Facing the nation’s top-ranked team, No. 5 Syracuse suffered its first defeat of the 2014 season after falling, 3-0, to North Carolina on Friday afternoon.

The Orange (6-1, 0-1 ACC) saw its six-game win streak snapped as the Tar Heels (5-0, 1-0 ACC) dominated SU throughout the 70-minute contest.

North Carolina goalie Shannon Johnson's four saves led the Tar Heels, who posted their first shutout since blanking SU in the 2013 ACC Tournament semifinals.

With the introduction of a new student ID card this semester, Syracuse University students face slightly steeper costs for replacing lost or damaged IDs.

The SU sophomore has scored two goals this season to spark the Orange to a 4-0 start.

Syracuse soccer has gotten off to a great start this season, winning its first four games.

Sophomore forward Chris Nanco has been one of the biggest reasons for that success.

Nanco started the season by scoring in his first game and leading the Orange to the Central New York Classic, where he was named the offensive MVP. After scoring only four times last season, he already has a pair through SU’s first four games, including the only goal in a 1-0 Orange victory over St. John’s.

Award-winning author Kevin Powers will open the annual series at 7 p.m. Thursday in Watson Theatre.

The 2014 Syracuse Symposium kicks off Thursday with one of the most diverse lineups to date. The annual semester-long event, which started in 2001, draws on the theme “perspective” this year by asking the question, “How do we see the world?”

Sophomore Peggy Pappas has been working out six days per week and adhering to a very strict diet plan before this Saturday's Kentucky Muscle event.

Syracuse University sophomore Peggy Pappas is training for her first bodybuilding competition. Having spent the past few months getting her body into top shape, Pappas is entering crunch time before the April 19 contest.

Pappas is competing in the NPC (National Physique Committee) bikini division at a strength and fitness extravaganza called Kentucky Muscle, which will take place in Louisville, Ky.

New downtown location looks to book bigger bands and add alcohol to the menu alongside famous waffles.

The popular Marshall Street diner, Funk N’ Waffles, is opening up a new location downtown in Armory Square. The new venue plans to serve alcohol and bring more live music into town, but will try to stay family-oriented.

There is also no exact date for the opening yet, owner Adam Gold says.

“I have never done anything like that before, I am unsure about the date,” he said.

As Syracuse University turns 144 on March 24, the campus is engaged in daylong activities ranging from signing a giant birthday card to eating cake.

To celebrate Syracuse University’s 144th birthday on March 24, a campus-wide party has taken Schine Student Center, Ernie Davis Hall, the Life Sciences Complex and Sadler Hall by storm. A very orange storm, that is.

Director Ryan Travis and his ensemble of young men set out to expose the realities and falsities of the modern male African-American experience in a new derived theatrical performance.

Ryan Travis sits at the head of a table at Syracuse University's Arts Engage center downtown. He listens intently as a black SU student explains the story of his first experience with racism as a child.

Suddenly, Travis springs from his seat, raising his hands over his head and explaining an idea for transferring the student's story from the table to the stage.

On Friday night, Syracuse University Pride Union hosted its yearly student drag show. The night was MC'd by celebrity drag queen Shangela Laquifa Wadley, and consisted of several high-energy acts from student drag queens and kings.

The 12th Annual Totally Fabulous Drag Show finals were held Feb. 21 in the Goldstein Auditorium. The auditorium was packed with eager students and Syracuse residents.
