The Orange survived a scare Sunday slipping by William & Mary 63-60 in the Carrier Dome.

Last Sunday Jim Boeheim didn’t hold any punches back when he spoke about his team during a post game press conference after defeating Canisius. “Right now, we’re the most overrated team that I’ve ever had.”

Most fans thought Boeheim said it to motivate his squad, but if that didn’t work William & Mary did enough to get his team’s attention.  On Sunday, SU survived a thriller in where they only led by two points at the half, and were knotted in a tie with less than two minutes left.

The Orange finished off its conference season with a 23-6 home loss to the disappointment of the Carrier Dome crowd.

Syracuse University football has been rejuvenated this year no doubt. The clinching of bowl eligibility is proof. But as much as this team has improved, last night’s offensively stagnant 23-6 loss to the Connecticut Huskies at the Carrier Dome showed how much room for improvement there is.

The SU women's ice hockey team was overwhelmed by Clarkson, losing 3-2 at Tennity Ice Pavilion.

The band played fight songs and drummed marching beats while fans cheered for their team at Friday night’s Syracuse women’s ice hockey game. The fans, which filled half the bleachers at Tennity Ice Complex on Syracuse’s South Campus, sang fight songs and chanted cheers that helped lead their team to victory.

The oddity in this is that members of the band and accompanying fans were wearing green and yellow. They weren’t cheering for the Orange. They traveled from Clarkson University to support their players on the ice.

Ryan Nassib threw for two touchdowns and the Syracuse defense scored one of its own on a blocked field goal, as the Orange crushed Akron, 29-3, to open the season with a victory for the first time since 2003.

“That’s the way we wanted to open it up," senior running back Delone Carter said in a postgame interview. "Just set the stage and continue to work hard and do it every game.

SU looks to the experience of its defense to become the backbone of this year's team.

Expectations are high for Syracuse’s defense this season with nine returning starters who significantly improved under defensive coordinator Scott Shafer’s system last season.

“The experience is there,” said senior free safety Mike Holmes who led the team in 2009 with three interceptions. “We’re definitely looking forward to going out there and bringing that experience.”

With a number one ranking on the line, Syracuse gets its eighth straight win behind a career performance from Chris Daniello and a strong effort from a stingy defense.

Syracuse pulled out the overtime win in a hard fought contest between the two Central New York rivals despite a dominant performance from Hobart goalie Max Silberlicht.

The Central New York Lacrosse rivalry between the Syracuse Orange (5-1, Big East 1-0) and the Hobart Statesmen (2-4, 0-1 ECAC) continued Tuesday night when the Orange squeaked by with a 9-8 overtime win at a cold and wet McCooey Field in Geneva, N.Y.

A crowd of 2,000 came out in full force despite the conditions, peppering SU players with unmentionable chants about their mothers and sisters and even a reappearance of the dead fish toss onto the turf.
