The Syracuse University community gathered for a candlelight vigil Sunday night in memory of the victims of recent attacks of terror in Paris and Beirut, as well as victims of a Russian flight that crashed in Egypt.
The 2015-16 Remembrance Scholars and Lockerbie scholars organized the event, held at the Wall of Remembrance, a memorial for the 35 SU students who died in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988 and who the Remembrance Scholars represent.
Chancellor Kent Syverud sent an email Saturday to the SU community about the Friday-night terrorist attacks in Paris that left 129 dead.
“Because of Pan Am Flight 103, this great University long ago experienced the searing pain of terrorism,” Syverud wrote. “Each day since then, we have paid respect to those victims and learned how to reassert and fight for our values of good in the face of evil.”
Syverud extended prayers for the lives lost and expressed support for the loved ones of the victims. The Hall of Languages was lit in the colors of the French flag Saturday night.
“Our hearts ache for our friends in France and for all the men, women, and children affected by yesterday’s terror attacks,” Syverud wrote.
