At the heart of Bruegger's Bagel Bakery is the atmosphere of a small-town restaurant with the affordability of a fast-food conglomerate. Bruegger's genius is specializing in one basic breakfast item. It's like Krispy Kreme, but for bagels. The bakery offers dozens of freshly baked bagels and home-made cream cheeses.

The Scene: Opening at 5 a.m. on weekdays, the restaurant receives most of its business in the morning as people grab a quick bite before work or classes. But, throughout the afternoon, consumers continue to flock in. The dining area is usually filled with young couples, families and individuals taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi.

Think Outside the Bagel: Bruegger's expanded its menu in 2003 to include sandwiches and salads. The bakery also offers coffee. For the same price, you can get a better selection at Starbucks. But, you don't come to Bruegger's for the coffee, so it makes little difference.

Sandwiches: Like the bagels, the breads at Bruegger's are baked each day so they're guaranteed to be fresh. The breakfast sandwiches range from $3 to $6. And the deli sandwiches are between $5 and $7. But, if you're going to get a sandwich, you might as well opt for a Panini—the warmer, cheesier, butterier option. It's okay; your waistline will forgive you later.

Salads: The salads are the more expensive options, costing around $7, but they are more than worth it. Rather than a bed of nutritionally-deficient iceberg lettuce, you get a mixture of greens and your choice of vegetables. And for those calorie-conscious, all the salads are under 500 calories.

Bottom Line: Even with many menu options, the bagels are still the star of the show, and rightfully so. Morning or afternoon, bagels are apparently appropriate at all times. And with the low prices at Bruegger’s, a couple dollars will go a long way.
