Alto Cinco

Alto Cinco is the Mexican restaurant of your dreams. An extensive menu full of reasonably priced choices and an atmosphere — unmatched by any place on Marshall Street — will keep you coming back to the Westcott Street eatery for more. With 14 types of burritos, 10 quesadillas, and a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan options, there is something for everyone. Since Alto Cinco opened in 1995, the restaurant's homemade salsa, guacamole, jalapeno cornbread, bread, soups and sauces have been made fresh each day without MSG or preservatives.

When to Go: Alto Cinco is busiest at dinner time, so you might have to wait a few minutes for a table. The restaurant's seating is a bit sparse and the largest table seats five, but takeout is available. Stop by with a friend or two between 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. Delivery is also available from 5 p.m to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sundays. The late night menu can be found here for orders made from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Breakfast is available from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The bottom line: Sit down or order out — the food will be ready fast and you will not be disappointed.

On Tap: Complement your meal with a cerveza for the full experience. Have a Corona, Dos Equis, Heineken, Pacifico, Negra Modelo, or Middle Ages Swallow Wit for $4. Other beers, including a few gluten-free options, are listed above the bar. Red and white wines are also available. The bottom line: Come for the food but stay for a drink ... or three.

The Scene: Alto Cinco is in an artsy hippie sort of neighborhood, and its décor reflects that. Lights dangle from the ceiling and colorful artwork adorns the walls. Stools are situated around the bar, and six small tables are set up along the wall for couples and small groups. You can also enjoy your meal outside if the weather is nice. The bottom line: You won't want to leave.

Blue Plate Special: Satisfy your Mexican craving with one of Alto Cinco's 14 massive burritos ranging from $5 to $12. Personalize your burrito with a white, wheat, or gluten-free wrap. Add a piece of jalapeno corn bread and small salad for $2.50 if you have a death wish. The bottom Line: Come hungry ... make that starving.

The Crew: The staff is attentive and quick. They're laid-back and don't mind adjusting your order. Ask for a suggestion if you can't decide on your meal, and they will be more than willing to help. The bottom line: They're there to help you.

The Crowd: Many of the diners are college students, but young locals also frequent the establishment. The bottom line: Anyone is welcome.

The Deets: Alto Cinco is tucked in next to the Westcott Theater at 526 Westcott St. Its menu offers plenty of options for you and your friends. The bottom line: If you're a true fan of Mexican food, you should plan to visit Alto Cinco once a week.
