Thanks to a commitment to bringing the best new music to their listeners, two of Syracuse University’s radio stations are up for a mtvU Woodie Award. WERW [12] and WJPZ [13] are nominated in the Top 50 College Radio Woodie category and could be honored with a Woodie for being the best college radio station in the country for 2011.
Supporters can vote [14] for the stations as many times as they want before the Top 25 nominees are revealed on February 8. The sixth annual mtvU Woodie Awards [15] will air live for the first time on Wednesday, March 16, at 12 a.m. on MTV, MTV2, mtvU.
WERW was established in 1987 and is the university’s only independent, student-run radio station. The station web-casts numerous free-format radio shows featuring hip hop, underground rock, world, R&B, electronica, and talk radio programs. Student DJs create their own radio shows that are broadcasted to the masses of Central New York on 1570 AM and on the Internet.
WJPZ, also known as Z89, is a station that credits itself for having a distinct focus on new music and playing exactly 90 seconds of commercials per hour. Additionally, “The Beat of Syracuse” has Central New York sports coverage and is broadcasted online and on 89.1 FM.
