The Syracuse (13-7, 2-4) women’s basketball team beat Seton Hall (7-13, 0-6) 70-66 on Sunday at the Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, N.J. SU junior center Kayla Alexander [13]led the Orange with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. Junior guard, Elashier Hall [14] added 14 points, and a game-high 6 assists.
The game was a back and forth affair with the lead changing hand nine different times, including three ties. But Syracuse, the nations top rebounding team controlled play with a 47-38 rebounding advantage. SU shot 38% (24-of-36) from the field.
The first half ended with the Orange having a three-point advantage at 37-34, but a 10-2 run gave the team their largest lead of the day. Within minutes Seton Hall responded with 17 straight points of their own making the score 53-47. During the Pirates’ streak junior forward Terry Good landed back-to-back three pointers.
Syracuse trailed 66-62 with 1:24 remaining, but managed to score eight straight points to finish the game. The Orange were tied it at 66 with just over a minute remaining, but senior forward Iasia Hemingway [15] would go on to score three of the games final four points to push the Orange past the Pirates.
Pirates guard Jasmine Crew, who led Seton Hall with 19 points in the game, had a chance to send the game to overtime, but her shot was off the mark and the Orange sealed the victory.
The Orange play next in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday night against No. 3 Connecticut.
