In no time, a fast growing crowd of students and community residents filled the floor and balcony seats of the Goldstein Auditorium at Syracuse University's Schine Student Center on Thursday, Oct. 16. The annual concert event put on by SU's National Pan-Hellenic Council [11] had sold out the night before, and by the looks of the social media of the performers as well students, much anticipation had been built up behind each performance.
The DJ started his on-stage set of straight hip-hop music new and old, mounting the crowd’s anticipation for the performances. Suddenly, the lights went off, and Huey Cal [12] hit the stage, performing tracks from his latest mix tape, Late Nights Vol. II. Cal, a former SU student, paced the stage back and forth, gripping the mic close to his face with his eyes glued intently on the crowd. He jumped up and down, as the crowed vibed to his performance.
After Cal’s set, the DJ spun hits from Rich Homie Quan [13], Shy Glizzy [14], Migos [15] and K Camp [16], causing a pandemonium in the auditorium. The crowd, lost in excitement, was taken off guard when the DJ brought out the Georgia-based rap trio Migos, who began to belt out lyrics to “Handsome and Wealthy.” Throughout the performance, the trio provided the audience with a steady stream of music, including their top hits “Freak No More,” “Antidope,” “Add It Up” and their hit single “YRH” with Rich Homie Quan.
Kelechi Achuko, a health and exercise science senior, said she was glad that Migos came and showed the Syracuse community a good time.
“I love Migos, since day one. Sometimes I try to bump them when I’m hanging out, and no one knows who they are at all," she said. "But tonight, they came and showed out.” With a grin on her face, Achuko began to rap the lyrics to “Handsome and Wealthy."
The trio, decked out in gold chains and grills, rocked the stage back and forth until K Camp came on, which for many, made the show worth standing in the pouring rain for. With no hesitation, K Camp commanded the stage, jumping up and down and reminding the audience that he is a hit maker. The hip-hop artist performed his 2012 hit single “All The Way Down” as well as “Money Baby,” “Blessing” and “Cut Her Off.”
When the Georgia rapper wasn’t performing his hits, he was playing those of his fellow rappers. At one point the DJ played “Recognize,” a new hit from Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR [17]. K Camp's presence on stage gained full participation from every thrilled audience member. The rapper asked for everyone to take out their phones and wave them in the air as they sang along with the lyrics.
Kameelah Pointer, a public health sophomore, said that the concert was what she needed to really kick off her semester.
“Last night was live. Everybody was ‘turnt,'" Pointer said. "K Camp had everyone feeling every song he performed. Now this is what I call the No. 1 party school."
