Come April 11, the SU community can officially call him Chancellor Syverud.
Kent Syverud will officially be installed as Syracuse University’s 12th Chancellor and President on Friday, April 11.
Starting at 7 a.m., the new Chancellor will embark on a 1.2-mile run around campus that will end on the Shaw Quad, where a celebration will ensue. Students, faculty and staff are invited to join.
At 4 p.m., the installment ceremony will take place at Hendricks Chapel. The event will bring together members of the SU community, representatives from other local and national universities, senior university officials and members of the Board of Trustees. The ceremony will also feature former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor [9]. Syverud was a clerk for Justice O’Connor in 1984.
After greetings and remarks, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Richard L. Thompson, ’67, will lead a medal presentation. The inauguration is expected to end by 5:15 p.m.
“This day marks a distinctive milestone in the history of Syracuse University,” said Chairman Thompson. “We are extremely fortunate to have Chancellor Syverud at the helm of our great University. I look forward to the SU community coming together for this special day as we formally welcome the Chancellor and celebrate his commitment to steward us toward an even brighter future.”
After the ceremony, a celebration will be held on the quad to culminate the day’s festivities. Food, music and entertainment will be provided. All events, except the ceremony, are free and open to the public.
The ceremony, a ticketed event, will be broadcast to different campus locations and streamed online at www.syr.edu [10]. The University will announce more information about tickets for the ceremony in the coming weeks.
The University announced a competition called Fast Forward for the time leading up to the inauguration. Here, students will propose new initiatives for the University. The winners will receive up to $1,500 in grants to fund their projects.
