The Orange fall to the Irish

After SU earned a two-goal lead, the Irish scored four unanswered in the second half to snatch victory away from the Orange.

The Syracuse University men’s soccer team (12-6-0, 5-3-0 Big East) lost 4-2 to the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Saturday, Nov. 3.

The loss knocks Syracuse out of the Big East Tournament.

SU made its first Big East Tournament appearance since 2005.

Northeast schools take steps to protect students and faculty from Hurricane Sandy

As Hurricane Sandy rolls in from the sea, universities and colleges in New York and other northeastern states cancel class and work to prepare their communities for the superstorm.

Hurricane Sandy's rapid approach has universities and colleges all over the Northeast scrambling to keep their students and faculty members safe. In New York state, colleges are taking various steps toward protecting their communities.

At Fordham University in the Bronx, classes are canceled through Tuesday, and on Monday afternoon students received an email saying that the health center and gym would be closed. The dining halls will have limited hours and the university's field house will become the evacuation center if power is lost or the dorms get too dangerous.

Forecasts for Hurricane Sandy’s arrival and potential danger it could cause up and down the East Coast began late last week, but it wasn’t until Monday that the storm’s threat became real for Syracuse University students.

Around 10:30 a.m. the university issued a campus-wide email via SU News/Weather Alert informing students, staff and faculty that classes would be canceled from 1:40 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, through Tuesday, Oct. 30. To prepare, both students and local residents hit the stores to stock up on supplies before the worst of the weather.

Onondaga Lake cleanup project begins after 15 years of planning

Syracuse companies begin four year process of dredging toxic waste from Onondaga Lake.

Before the dredging on Onondaga Lake began this past summer, Monday nights were bocce nights at the lake’s park. There was gossip, laughter and the clicks of metal hitting metal.  As soon as the wind blew, however, the air became pungent, giving the lake away. 

The stench made the bocce players’ noses wrinkle, but they kept playing. 

Far across on the west and southwest shores, the waters began to stir.

Man stabbed at "Orange Madness"

SPD is currently investigating a stabbing that took place at the Carrier Dome and cut "Orange Madness" 30 minutes short.

On what is typically a night where SU students and fans celebrate the beginning of the Syracuse men's and women's basketball seasons, Orange Madness was cut 30 minutes short after a 25-year-old man was stabbed in the concourse area of the Carrier Dome.

The stabbing occurred around 9:30 p.m. following several fights that took place throughout evening, none of which involved SU students.

Orange win second in a row

Despite the soggy weather, the Orange, led by senior Alyscha Mottershead, defeated Seton Hall 3-1.

Alyscha Mottershead had just seen Syracuse’s women’s soccer team lose a lead to visiting Seton Hall, despite a superbly placed assist to take the lead in the 24th minute.

The senior midfielder wasn’t about to let it happen again.

The Orange voted top team in the country

After a weekend during which the field hockey team defeated Rutgers and Princeton, the undefeated Orange are now the team to beat.

After convincing shutout wins against Rutgers and No. 3-ranked Princeton last weekend, the Orange field hockey team has been voted as the No. 1 team in the nation.

When Tuesday's poll came out, the Orange (9-0) had secured 25 first place votes, supplanting the University of North Carolina (22 first place votes) as the top team in the nation. The Tar Heels had held the top spot for the majority of the season.

Friday, the Orange downed Rutgers (4-5) 6-0 behind two goals from All-American Kelsey Millman and two assists by sophomore Stephanie Hussey.

Orange Madness set for Oct. 12

SU's Orange Madness will treat Syracuse fans and students to a preview of the men's and women's basketball teams before the season.

On Oct. 12, former SU basketball star Scoop Jardine and Jazmine Jordan, daughter of Michael Jordan, will host Orange Madness in the Carrier Dome, the SU athletics department announced Wednesday.

This year's special guest performer is rapper Wale, who has produced two studio albums with a third due to be released in early 2013. Tickets are free open to the public, and the event is set to begin at 8 p.m.
