Café Club Surreal offered live, interactive works of art on Saturday as part of the CRAVE arts festival.

CRAVE’s Café Club Surreal brought the crazy, quirky and cool to AXA Tower’s patio on Saturday in downtown Syracuse.

A mashup between a night club and Cirque du Soleil, the dimly lit space was packed as people posing as “live art” jumped, walked, ran and danced to house and electronic mixes around audience members, creating an environment of suspense, surprise and fun.

Audience members like Jessica Desalu, a clinical psychology PhD. student at SU, couldn’t peel their eyes away the walking works of art.

The only online Crave festival event, One Hello World composes music to heartfelt, unique and authentic voicemails.

When someone doesn’t answer the phone, many people will leave a voicemail. Now imagine this voicemail as a song, part of a greater project to turn people’s stories into soundtracks.

This is One Hello World, a project that requests voicemails from participants to turn into song. The project has currently recorded 127 tracks and released an album, “The Listener,” in 2012.

Get to know Syracuse, one neighborhood at a time. Up first: Westcott; from pretty parks to several restaurants to organized bike rides, there is plenty to eat, drink, see, do and shop when you tour through Syracuse's "hipster-ville."

"Blithe Spirit" opens Sept. 18, but Gretchen Darrow-Crotty and her team have been preparing since the summer for this performance.

It’s the calm before the storm. A chance to breathe before the chaos.

The Syracuse Stage season begins in September and usually ends in late April or early May, which leaves the summer months void of performances and gives those who work for the company some semblance of a break.

But that doesn’t mean Gretchen Darrow-Crotty hasn’t already been hard at work since last season ended.

Traditional carnival foods may be one-time treats for some, but also showcase the lack of nutritional knowledge many Americans have about food.

There is perhaps no better way to observe the state of American health culture than at The Great New York State Fair.

Proudly displayed on posts and columns are “I ♥ NY Smoke Free” signs next to concessions’ menus offering fried dough, Oreos, foot-long hot dogs, beer and pizza pies. The entrance to the Kids’ Zone is labeled a “smoke-free zone,” but it contains a dessert stand and a taco concession.

Smoking is bad — that much the State Fair believes. Carnival food, however, is fair game.

Cleanups aren't the only way to show your love for the planet on April 22. Check out some of these other local events, and you can celebrate Earth Day all week long.

Earth Day is Monday, April 22, but Central New York has started the party for our planet a week early.

Nearly 5,000 volunteers picked up trash last Friday and Saturday in Onondaga County as part of the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency’s Earth Day cleanup. In those two days, they collected over 8,400 pounds of garbage. Cleanups are planned through this week and into the weekend around the county, if you’re looking to help out.

Thirty years since former gang leader General Davis ruled the streets, Syracuse is home to 22 gangs and 1,300 gang members, and the violent crime rate remains above the national average.

Three decades ago, it would have been unimaginable to have a conversation with General Davis in a public space like the chic Café Kubal on University Avenue in Syracuse. What can you expect from a man who is a self-proclaimed "one stop shop for gangs in Syracuse"?
