Women's basketball: Peterson leads Orange to sloppy victory over North Carolina

The win is SU's first over a ranked opponent this season.

Syracuse made only 27.3 percent of its field goals. It committed 16 turnovers, with 10 in the first half alone. It trailed its opponent in rebounds, blocks and nearly ever relevant shooting category. 

None of that mattered. 

When the final buzzer sounded in the Carrier Dome, the Orange came out victorious. More importantly, it could finally claim a win over a ranked opponent following seven failures.

When SU opens against Siena on Feb. 7, a pair of new faces from the JUCO powerhouse will be aiding the team in its quest for another championship.

The No. 4 Syracuse men’s lacrosse team will add two players who dominated the junior college ranks to its team this year.        

Midfielder Tim Barber and goalkeeper Warren Hill are just the latest to join a long list of players who have transferred from Onondaga Community College to play for the Orange.

Two months ago, Zaw Thin Nyein relocated to Syracuse from Hawaii; now, he is one of the five home chefs featured in the sixth My Lucky Tummy popup food court.

On Saturday night, people gathered at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, taking a bite of the world. Meanwhile, more than being a food court, My Lucky Tummy provides the attendees a space to “meet people and have some conversations,” said Adam Sudmann, founder of My Lucky Tummy.

A local Syracuse man rebuilt his taxi and offers people like SU coach Jim Boeheim rides.

A row of antique yellow-checkered taxicabs lined the road of Brooklyn’s dilapidated Box Street in June. The vehicles stood out with vivid hues on a street populated by warehouses. While this Checker Car Club of America’s annual convention might seem an oddity for most New Yorkers, it’s a tradition for 53-year-old Syracuse resident Phillip Arnold.

The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration, whose theme this year was "Remember. Celebrate. Act." is in its 30th year, and featured the presentation of the Unsung Hero Awards.

The quest for racial equality in America is still far from complete, award-winning radio journalist and former ABC news correspondent Michele Norris told about 2,000 spectators gathered in the Carrier Dome on Sunday in celebration of the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

William Gorman finds freedom in his music and from the support of his church after the loss of his father.

His music has freed his mind and the sounds have released his pain as one local high school senior heals after his father’s death.

“I just try to keep moving,” said William Gorman, a senior at Nottingham High School.

Gorman's father died earlier this year, and he quickly realized that nothing could have prepared him for that moment.

Despite his attempts to live knowing every moment is fleeting, Gorman knows that only time will lessen his pain.

Syracuse has three coffee roasters vying for the attention of caffeine addicts across the region, but who serves the best cup?

Freedom of Espresso has four locations sprinkled throughout Syracuse, Liverpool and Fayetteville. The Fayetteville shop, 128 W. Genesee St., is their home base and roasting facility. The pumpkin latte from Freedom was well balanced—I could taste the espresso while still having that hint of sweet. However, the milk was not steamed properly.

Frozen Dome Classic welcomes 30,715 fans, breaks record

The Syracuse Crunch beat the Utica Comets 2-1 in a game that set the pro indoor hockey attendance record history Saturday night in the Carrier Dome.

Temperatures dropped inside the Carrier Dome as blades scraped ice for the venue's first professional hockey game Saturday night.

A record-breaking crowd of 30,715 fans attended the Toyota Frozen Dome Classic, the most ever for an indoor professional hockey game. On the ice, the Syracuse Crunch beat the Utica Comets with a tight score of 2-1.

“Central New York became big tonight,” Crunch owner Howard Dolgon said in a post-game interview. “There was a uniqueness to the event and we leveraged that. It’s a tribute to Syracuse.”

The Duke head coach spoke highly of AJ Long and the rest of the Orange prior to their Saturday showdown.

Duke (7-1) head football coach David Cutcliffe spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon during the Atlantic Coast Conference's weekly coaches teleconference.

Not surprisingly, Cutcliffe talked about the Blue Devils' upcoming date with Syracuse (3-6) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.

Democracy in Action students cover local, state and national races for the mid-term elections in Onondaga County.

Through the Democracy in Action project, undergraduate and graduate students in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications share voters' Election Day stories through photos, audio, video and text.

Students went to the polls, speaking with voters in Syracuse and the surrounding suburbs, where they heard voters' opinions about electronic voting scanners; met families casting their ballots together; and witnessed local traditions, such as Syracuse's annual Election Day spaghetti dinner.
