Review: After four openers played for a sparse crowd, OWEL rocked The Spark Contemporary Art Gallery

The Spark Contemporary Art Gallery hosted brilliant Equal Vision Records indie bands OWEL and Northern Faces, along with three local openers on Thursday night in Syracuse. Although there weren’t too many willing to brave the cold, it didn’t stop each band that played from blowing the doors off the venue.

Central New York is a hotbed of tribute performances, but the trend depends on where you're seeing the show.

When he’s performing on stage, musician Jon Braun isn’t himself. While dozens of rock singers might cop to the same sentiment (Bono especially), Braun’s loss of self has nothing to do with entering a trance or reaching a higher spiritual plane upon seeing 200 fans cheering him on. Chris Conley plays old favorites and new songs at the Lost Horizon, with help from a few local acts.

Saves the Day frontman Chris Conley's singing is a laborious process. When he reaches up for the high notes, his face scrunches up, resembling an overbearing grandmother looking for a child's cheeks to pinch.

Review: Best Coast opens the semester at Westcott Theater with Syracuse acts Animal Pants and Sarah Aument.

There may have been other people besides Syracuse University students at the Westcott Theater Friday night, but, as Giovanni Giardina, drummer for Syracuse band Animal Pants put it, it was "an SU party."

The Syracuse-based band returns home to play the opening day of the Fair at Chevy Court.

Kayleigh Goldsworthy strolled the thoroughfare around the Chevy Court stage at the New York State Fair Thursday munching on a deep-fried potato on a stick. Her twin sister, Kaleena, had just polished off a corndog and was milling around behind the stage. Considering the two were about to perform on opening day at one of the fair’s largest stages, they were completely at ease.

Sarongs latest gig at The Lost Horizon proved there's no excuse to miss their next one.

If you haven’t listened to Sarongs yet, do it now. Click away from whatever other
diversion you’re currently enthralled with and check them out. Then make every effort to see
them play live as soon and as often as you can. February 26 at The Lost Horizon would be a good start.
