A sustainability-themed music and arts festival brought people together to celebrate Earth Day on Sunday.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Events are held worldwide in order to show support for environmental awareness and protection. This holiday is important to our community and our world, as the global temperature continues to rise and species continue to go extinct.

Syracuse residents raised awareness with Earthfest, a sustainability-themed music and arts festival celebrating Earth Day in Thornden Park Amphitheater on Sunday.

Students clean out their closets and trade clothes at the Style Lottery Closet Swap.

Students recycled their wardrobes at the Style Lottery Closet Swap on Monday evening.

The closet swap is comparable to the thrifting experience, since the items gathered are gently used clothing, shoes and accessories from event participants. Junior psychology major Tauri Howard is a brand ambassador for Style Lottery, and she was part of the team who organized the event.

“I went with the idea that the swap would be a one-for-one kind of thing, but I ended up leaving with more than I brought in,” Howard said.

Students of Sustainability and Divest SU and ESF hosted the rally Tuesday on the Quad.

“Divest! Divest! Put fossil fuel to rest!”

Hundreds of SU and SUNY-ESF students marched alongside more than 300,000 other demonstrators in New York City at the largest climate change march ever.

At the People’s Climate March, students from Syracuse University and SUNY-ESF called for their universities to stop investing in fossil fuels, as well as other ways to make their campuses more sustainable.

The culminating event of Earthfest, put on by Students of Sustainability, asked students to examine what they eat and the effect it has on their health and the environment.

Boxes of couscous and noodles lined the table as event planners prepared for the presentation at Watson Theater. Conscious Consumption, sponsored by Students of Sustainability, closed out this year’s Earthfest activities.
