Elementary principal fighting to fund his public school

Marc Gosselin, principal of Anna Lane Lingelbach Elementary near Philadelphia, inherited a budget that provided only 40 cents of support to each student.

Located on the edge of Philadelphia, Anna Lane Lingelbach Elementary school is one of the most underfunded schools in Pennsylvania.

When Marc Gosselin started as the Germantown school's principal in August 2014, he was shocked to learn his operating budget for the 2014-2015 academic year was less than 40 cents for each of its 400 students.

Gosselin, and the students of Lingelbach Elementary school, had been allotted $160 by the City of Philadelphia school system for the year.

SU's starting guard has cousins living here in Syracuse to support him on and off the basketball court this season.

Teams rise to the top of the polls with support.

As the Syracuse University men's basketball team currently plays as the nation's No. 1 team, senior guard Scoop Jardine knows all about support.

Most fans know Jardine is a cousin to fellow teammate sophomore Dion Waiters, but the senior guard also has two more cousins who moved to Syracuse during the past year.

After a troubled past Dion Waiters finds himself at Syracuse trying to become a star.

The old saying is unless you walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, you don’t know what they have been through. Dion Waiters’ footsteps started in the violent trappings of Philadelphia.  He says basketball was a life line.

“Coming from Philly, it’s hard out here,” reflective Waiters said. “So if anybody is successful, it’s a blessing because it’s a rough neighborhood. I’m just fortunate that basketball kept me out of trouble.”
