The NewsHouse caught up with the Block Party special guests on the formation of the band, playing in front of their parents and holographic Tupac.

NewsHouse: Let’s start from scratch: how’d you two meet and when did you know it was time to make a band?

Sarah Barthel: We’ve been friends since we were 15 or 14 years old. We went to high school together and my neighbor was one of Josh’s best friends. It was just that little block where all the kids would come to hang out. Then I went to college and Josh went to New York to work on different bands and we both moved back upstate at the same time in 2005. We started hanging out and after about two years we decided to take the band seriously.

After weeks of criticism from students, up-and-coming house DJ Kaskade, alt-rockers Cold War Kids and Phantogram are set to entertain thousands in the Carrier Dome.

Is anyone going to Block Party this year?  That might be a question you hear around campus lately.

After University Union announced last month Block Party 2012 would feature DJ Kaskade and alt-rock act Cold War Kids, some students quickly vocalized their displeasure for the choices. 

Past Block Parties brought acts such as Kid Cudi, Nas, Kanye West and N.E.R.D., so expectations for big name artists this year were high again. 

Phantogram to play at SU

UPDATE: The electric rock band will play at Block Party.

Multiple concert listing outlets are reporting that indie pop band Phantogram will be playing at Syracuse University on April 27.

Ra Ra Riot's recent Wescott show announcement headlines the music happenings impacting SU within the last two weeks.
  • The Northbound Traveling Minstrel Jug Band (you could call them a CMJ darling) is currently streaming a new seven song EP on their Facebook page. They're also opening for Tea Leaf Green tomorrow night at the Wescott Theater.

Top 5 Disappointments in Music this Week

Musically, this week has really me bummed out -- from music videos to canceled shows. I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore.

It's bad enough I broke my fifth pair of headphones this year, but it's a whole other kind of torture when so many things have sucked in music news this week. Canceled shows top the list, but lazy music videos and sheer WTF? moments also demand attention.

1) Phantogram cancels their trip to Albany, NY
