Commencement closes out the school year and college careers for more than 6,000 Syracuse and SUNY-ESF students.

For more than 6,000 college students, years of classroom lectures, life lessons and newfound friendships culminated Sunday at Syracuse University's 159th Commecement.

The annual ceremony brought thousand of family members and friends to the Carrier Dome to cheer on students from SU, the school's College of Law and SUNY's College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

SU officials announced Sunday that award-winning journalist and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof will be this year's commencement speaker.

Nicholas Kristof, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and opinion columist for the New York Times, will be delivering the commencement speech at Syracuse University and the State University of New York College of Environmental and Science and Forestry's graduaton ceremony May 12.

"Nicholas Kristof personifies so many of our aspirations for our graduating students," Chancellor Nancy Cantor said in a March 3 SU news release.

Award-winning New York Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof discusses the vital role of women in addressing development issues across the globe.

“Are there more males or more females in the world today?” New York Times op-ed columnist Nicholas D. Kristof polls the audience at the beginning of his lecture. “Males?” A few tentative hands go up. “Females?” Most of the attendees in a packed-to-the-ceiling Hendricks Chapel raise their hands.

The answer is men. But Kristof’s answer to the world’s troubles is women.
