NCAA Tournament

Syracuse will be without its starting center, but what's the best way to go about taking down the Orange?

Let me preface this by saying that it’s not easy. Simple. But not easy. The Orange is deep, talented and buck wild in transition. However, despite its bulky record, Syracuse is more prone to a loss than one would suspect. Come tournament time, a team that can do the three tasks listed below has a good chance at pulling an upset over SU like Cincinnati and Notre Dame did.

If Syracuse wants to make it all the way to New Orleans for the Final Four, then they'll have to get by these teams

On Sunday, 68 teams were fortunate to make the esteemed NCAA tournament. As expected, the Orange was awarded a No. 1 seed in the East region.

Let’s take a look at who SU could potentially matchup against in the East and how much of a threat they are to end the Orange’s magical season.

16 Seed - UNC Asheville

The Scoop - A 16 seed has never beaten a 1 and this game won’t change that. UNC Asheville has good guards and gave the UNC Tar Heels a run for their money in the first half, but Syracuse is just too talented.

Maryland's Grant Catalino delivers a dagger in the final minute of sudden-death overtime to end the Orange’s NCAA tournament run.

It was a thrilling playoff finish that Syracuse lacrosse had become accustomed to in recent years. Only this time, the Orange didn't come out on top.

The unseeded Maryland Terrapins came back from an early deficit Sunday to defeat the No. 1-seeded SUY in overtime, 6-5. The quarterfinals loss sends Maryland to contend for the NCAA lacrosse title next weekend in Baltimore while SU will watch the Final Four from home for the second year in a row.

Syracuse jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and then pulled away in the second half to defeat a pesky Siena squad 10-4 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Syracuse moved into the NCAA quarterfinals Sunday with a 10-4 win over Siena, avenging the shocking upset to Army a year ago.

Johns Hopkins transfer Tommy Palasek played a big role in getting the Orange out of the first round this season, having his hand in each of Syracuse’s first four goals.

Marquette hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds to play, and the Golden Eagles defeated Syracuse for the second time this year to end SU's season and advance to the NCAA's Sweet-16.

Freshman guard Dion Waiters scored a career-high 18 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Orange were upset by 11-seed Marquette, 66-62, ending Syracuse’s season.

SU was hampered by 18 turnovers and six charging calls on offense. Marquette used heavy pressure to prevent the Orange from running their offense, and Syracuse struggled to find any sort of offensive rhythm.

The loss of sophomore Brandon Triche didn’t help the Orange either. Triche landed flush on his back after going up for a lay-up in the second half and never returned to the game.

Syracuse's superior size out-muscles 14-seed Indiana State Friday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, setting up a Sunday showdown with Big East foe Marquette.

Since the Syracuse Orange's disappointing loss to the Butler Bulldogs in the third round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, the Syracuse Orange believe they have to make up for lost time. In fact, “Unfinished Business” has been the team’s mantra for the season to serve as a reminder of the goal at hand: a national championship.

March 15, 2010 - 4:20pm
The 65-team NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament field was released on Sunday night, and the No. 4-ranked Syracuse Orange received their first No. 1 seed in 30 years. Syracuse (28-4) should pull up a chair at that complaint table with fellow upstate N.Y. schools Cornell and Siena.

The Syracuse University basketball wants to forever forget two memorable upsets in their NCAA history. The most memorable was in 1991 when the Orangemen, led by stars Adrian Autry and Billy Owens, became the first No. 2 seed to lose in the first round after losing to No. 15 seed Richmond, 73-69. The game was broadcast on CBS in prime time, setting the shock tones of March Madness reverberating across the country. Luckily, the Spiders, a No.

March 1, 2010 - 10:46pm
The Orange men's basketball team is the top-ranked team in the country for the first time since 1990. Head coach Jim Boeheim says it's time to stop celebrating, and Halftime Snack thinks fans should listen up.

College basketball fans are emotional, narrow-minded, and hard of hearing. In other words: just like the players. The blood pressure is rising, the sweaty bodies are banging around, and you never want the passion to be in question. And then you ignore your coach.

The current Orange squad, more talented and balanced than many can remember, and is 27-2 beacuse they believed in the system the head coach set up. The result: Syracuse received the top ranking in both major college basketball polls released on Monday.

An injury depleted Villanova Wildcats team toppled the favored Syracuse Orange in Radnor, Pa. Tuesday night, securing its first Big East victory of the season.

With key players missing due to a rash of injuries, Villanova was able to dig deep and jump out to an early lead.  Villanova (12-11, 1-9) maintained the lead with disciplined play and impressive shooting from beyond the arc, putting four players in double figures to beat Syracuse, 83-69, at the Pavilion.
