SU closes deficit before halftime, but fails to answer Fighting Irish touchdowns on back-to-back drives in the third quarter

The Syracuse Orange football team was an extra point away from tying the score against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on its first possession Saturday at MetLife Stadium.

After an Irish touchdown on the first play of the game, SU quarterback Eric Dungey capped off an eight play, 75-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run. But, the Orange’s extra point attempt was blocked by Notre Dame and returned for an Irish two-point conversion.

SU forced five turnovers, but mustered only 15 points at MetLife Stadium on Saturday evening.

Through the first quarter, Syracuse matched up with Notre Dame as well as any team had during the 2014 season.

Unfortunately for the Orange, there was still 45 minutes of play.

On a humid Saturday night in front of 76,802 fans, the largest crowd ever for a college football game at MetLife Stadium, the Orange sputtered midway through its contest with the No. 8 Fighting Irish and fell 31-15.

Two Friday games and a date with the defending national champions highlight the home slate.

On Tuesday, Syracuse Athletics released the full 2014 schedule for the Syracuse University football team. SU is preparing for its second season as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Orange will host a pair of Friday night games: the season-opener against Villanova on Aug. 29 and a Big East reunion with Louisville on Oct. 3 in the team's first ACC matchup. The latter will be televised by ESPN.

More than 200 members of Syracuse University's marching band took part in the Super Bowl pre-game performance.

For many Syracuse University students, there was little that could top the excitement of the SU-Duke basketball game last Saturday night.

But for members of SU's marching band, that was merely a warm-up for what was likely the biggest performance of their musical careers: Super Bowl XLVIII.

Mere hours after what many are considering to be one college basketball team’s all-time best game, members of SU's marching band were back at the Carrier Dome.

The Orange failed to capitalize on opportunities, eventually falling to Penn State in MetLife Stadium.

Drew Allen’s career at Syracuse got off to an inauspicious start on Saturday at MetLife Stadium when the first snap from scrimmage for the Orange was botched for a 3-yard loss.

Things didn’t get much better for Syracuse, either, as Allen completed just 16 of 37 passes in a 23-17 loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions (1-0) in the second New York’s College Classic.

Football beat writer Tom Rende tackles the question on everyone's mind: Will Terrel Hunt or Drew Allen start at quarterback?

Syracuse has had the luxury of avoiding a true quarterback competition for the past three seasons ever since ex-head coach Doug Marrone named Ryan Nassib the starter for the 2010 season. Those two remained at Syracuse for the past three season before departing for greener pastures in the NFL, but now Syracuse has a chance to move on, as well.

A few key starters return, but a fierce five-way quarterback competition headlines the beginning of preseason.

With only 26 days left until the season opener at MetLife Stadium against Penn State, Syracuse’s first football season in the ACC is almost here. This season will also mark Scott Shafer’s first as a head coach. Since 2009, Shafer served as the defensive coordinator for the Orange. And last season, Shafer’s defensive unit ranked seventh in the nation.

“Everyone is going to be excited day one,” Shafer said. “It’s always fun when you open up camp because the kids are fired up and ready to go.”

SU is beginning to reap the benefits from playing at MetLife Stadium in front of a nationally televised audience.

This past Saturday, SU traveled to MetLife Stadium to play USC in hopes of creating a fanbase and strengthening their brand as a school and as a program. It worked.

The classic posted a rating of 3.3, behind only Florida and Texas A&M, but 4.7 million viewers tuned in to watch SU take on USC, while only 4.5 million tuned in for the Florida game.
