Civic hackathon brings awareness, solutions to hunger and homelessness

Hackers from Syracuse to Rochester and Ithaca gathered together to create apps and web services aimed at helping those experiencing homelessness.

Tony Kershaw remembers being homeless twice in his life. The 2005 alumnus of the College of Engineering recalls when he was 10, he had to go to his aunt’s house to take hot showers. He was homeless again while still an undergrad.

A new housing initiative aims to get homeless off Syracuse's downtown streets.

More than 400 people in Onondaga County live without a roof over their heads on any given day according to the Housing and Homeless Coalition of Syracuse and Onondaga County.  But a fragment of this population, who have claimed an I-81 underpass as their home, have emerged as a problem for at least one businessman who said their presence is scaring off his clients. 

NYPIRG banquet raises issues of hunger

The advocacy organization used an interactive workshop to inform students about the pervasiveness of hunger, especially in the Syracuse area.

If asked, most people would not be able to identify where Syracuse University's NYPIRG office is. But students involved with the New York Public Interest Research Group have been championing community awareness on a variety of topics and have brought attention to a major issue in the city's neighborhoods.

Jelly Jam feeds homeless

SU students made almost 1,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to feed homeless

The Syracuse Rescue Mission stopped by campus today to pick up about 1,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches Syracuse University students made for the homeless.

About 75 students gathered at Hendricks Chapel yesterday for the Protestant Campus Ministry's Jelly Jam.

Student filmmakers learn the struggles of homelessness from a man making his way off the streets.

In Transition was created by a group of students who wanted to challenge the public perception of homelessness. Seniors Nick Bupp and Brittany Schreiber along with graduate student Jamie Bryant produced the video for Prof. Richard Breyer's documentary production class.

The television, radio and film students talked to about 10 homeless men and women during the Fall 2008 semester before focusing on Peter's story. At the time, Peter, 52, had found transitional housing with the help of a local shelter. He had lived in various shelters for the past 20 years....
