Projects presented at this fall's biannual event include a device that alerts drivers of traffic light changes and a tool that summarizes long online articles.

Red traffic lights pose a stand off between a driver and traffic: Which will move first once the light turns green? Almost every driver has missed the one-second standard reaction time to accelerate his or her vehicle upon light a change. Whether it’s because they are taking swigs of water, changing the radio station or checking the mustard stain left over from lunch, drivers have missed this window. Honks and aggitated shouts echo through the street until these distracted individuals make haste, but what if the aggression could be avoided?

Hackers from Syracuse to Rochester and Ithaca gathered together to create apps and web services aimed at helping those experiencing homelessness.

Tony Kershaw remembers being homeless twice in his life. The 2005 alumnus of the College of Engineering recalls when he was 10, he had to go to his aunt’s house to take hot showers. He was homeless again while still an undergrad.

CNY technologists and designers collaborated to create new apps and technologies to aid their communities.

Jaws dropped around the room when 14-year-old Jack Cook presented what he had taken fewer than 24 hours to create. 

Cook, a freshman at the Bronx High School of Science, had, alone, created a virtual tool to make website programmers aware of errors that are normally nearly impossible to see and resolve.

He was presenting his program, called Fetch Errors, at Hack Upstate, one of the largest gatherings of programmers and techies outside of New York City.

The iSchool hosts its third Global Game Jam, fostering creativity and innovative game design.

It was 5 p.m. EST on Friday evening meaning that Europe and Asia had already begun, the West Coast and Hawaii had a few more hours of anticipation, and the Syracuse section of the Global Game Jam was about to start.
