Brittney Sykes

Brittney Sykes scored a career-high 31 points in SU's 73-48 victory over Virginia Tech.

The game had been a formality for the last 20 minutes, but there Brittney Sykes was — still on the court, directing traffic and barking out commands even as the ball swung to the other side of the floor. As the shot clock wound down and Syracuse was close to wasting a meaningless possession, she started to get impatient. She darted to the top of the key, asked for a screen, blew by a defender and hung in the lane for a layup — again.

Syracuse used a big run late in the first half that propelled it to an even bigger and turnover-free second half.

Syracuse women’s basketball team started its contest against the University of Virginia looking frustrated and flustered. After coming into the game ranked 17th in the nation in turnover differential, the team lost possession 16 times while only forcing seven turnovers.

But, with the score 33-29 and around three minutes to go, Syracuse went on an 11-2 run to end the half, taking the lead and battling through for a 84-75 victory. The win brought Syracuse to 15-5 on the season, and 4-3 in the ACC.

A lack of offensive and propensity for turnovers were too much for the Orange to overcome, falling to No. 6 Maryland.

No. 6 Maryland (15-1, 3-0 ACC) defeated Syracuse 77-62 (12-5, 1-3) Thursday night in College Park, M.d. to hand the Orange it’s third loss in ACC play and it’s third road loss.

Syracuse hasn’t won a road game since Nov. 30 at the Paradise Jam, and its struggles continued against No. 6 Maryland after a series of offensive droughts and turnovers plagued the Orange

The usual suspects -- sophomores Brianna Butler and Brittney Sykes -- propelled the Orange to victory, but the play of freshman Alexis Peterson helped secure the win.

After an embarrassing 33-point home loss to Duke last week, coach Quentin Hillsman wanted to know if his team was tough enough to survive in the rugged ACC. On Sunday against Georgia Tech, he found his answer.

Brianna Butler and Brittney combined for 42 of SU's 113 points in a landslide win over Maryland-Eastern.

Only 3.2 seconds was left in the first half. Everyone’s gaze was fixated on the clock as Syracuse and Maryland-Eastern players tussled at the ball as yells of “we want tacos” echoed throughout the Dome. The Lady Hawks came up with the ball but time expired before they could get a shot off.

The buzzer sounded. No tacos. But it was only the halftime buzzer.

But 13 seconds into the second half, the Syracuse women’s basketball team made a layup to mark the earliest taco time in Carrier Dome history.

The SU women's basketball team almost let the game slip through its fingers, but strong performances by Brittney Sykes and Shakeya Leary helped the Orange win.

In the closing moments of the second half, Washington State erased the Syracuse women’s basketball team’s 11-point cushion and was in striking distance with only 42 seconds left on the clock.

But sophomore guard Brittney Sykes reeled in her first steal of the game and took it to the other end for a layup to push the Orange up four.
